Gosh! Dual-layer DVD-Rs are expensive in the US! Can't remember the prices here, but I did see some in Fortune and while more than single-layer DVD-Rs they aren't anywhere near $8 each (I can check next time I walk past). The first real DVD9s all seem to have come from China (or somewhere like that) - the packaging is a bit of a give away (as are the subtitles), but they're burning them here now and real DVD9s (at least some of them) can be had for 100B, including DVD box!

You will find that the dual-layer DVD9s you see for 100 Baht are not burnt, but manufactured (i.e. glue marks in the center). Check on the prices of DVD-R [DL] media, and let me know what you see them for. The problem is that currently there are only 2 manufaturers (Verbatim and Fujitsu) making the media - once the Ritek factory, and the other generics come online, prices will invariably drop. Harry

Of course, always a new 'standard' - they want us to keep buying new equipment. Of course, there's going to be the usual 'standards' battle over Blu-Ray, Blu-Disc, Blu-Stuph and whatever else they come up with, until they all agree on drives that can burn and read all of these formats - so, realisically, the drives and media won't really become an issue for us consumers until end of 2005, mid 2006 (IMO). A fairly casual enquiry for a small quantity (200) ellicited a price of 220B without negotiation. Just over $5 a pop. I would imagine the price would come down a fair amount for more 'commercial' quantites (like multiples of a 1,000). Checked the last 100B DVD9 I bought and it looks like a DVD5 anyway

What's your source? I might delay my local purchase and just buy a bunch in LOS, if that's where your pricing is from. Harry

It was a random shop in Fortune. Prices (according to the sign in the window) were about B260 one-off, B250 25-off, B240 100-off, IIRCC. I would imagine they'd be a bit cheaper at Pantip. To be honest he said he didn't have any and was 'expecting' them this week. (Point was, even at B220 for a couple of hundred it's unlikely that they're burning DVDs in Bangkok for sale even at B180, unless prices plummet for lots of 10,000...er...which they probably do, but you know what I mean.) I have to visit Pantip this week to check prices for the new PC I'm building myself as an Xmas present (yes, I know that's sad) so I can check prices for you there if you like/can wait. How many are you after? PS Wouldn't US customs notice a bag stuffed with hundreds of DVD-Rs?

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 13 February 2007 :- Thailand slammed again for piracy ========================= An American business group representing the music, movie and software industries has recommended that Thailand and 15 other nations be placed at the top of US government lists of nations that do not adequately protect copyrights and other intellectual property. If the group gets its way, Thailand will be "promoted" from watch list to Priority Watch List for special attention from US government monitors - and possible punishment for continued violations. The International Intellectual Property Alliance, a coalition of seven industry groups, on Monday named Thailand as one of the seven top pirates, along with China, Russia, Argentina, Canada, Egypt and India. They and "nine other countries as having the worst records for copyright piracy," the group claimed. If the IIPA is to be believed: - 80 per cent of business software in Thailand is pirated, costing the legal makers $215 million - 82 per cent of "entertainment software" (i.e. not business software) is pirated. - 50 per cent of music sold in Thailand is pirated, and originally worth $20.7 million. - Sales of pirated books in Thailand cost the original publishers $35 million last year. - If people in Thailand paid the legal price to authorised dealers for every item they buy, it would have amounted to $219.7 million in 2006. China has taken steps to crack down on movie, software and music piracy, the group said, but their actions "have had little deterrent effect" because the penalties for copyright violators are too mild. Russia's copyright piracy problem "remains one of the most serious in the world" with piracy rates of roughly 70 per cent. The coalition said that losses from software piracy reached $12.3 billion in 2006, while music piracy cost U.S. companies $2.4 billion last year. The group wants the U.S. Trade Representative to place 45 countries, including China and Russia, on so-called "watch lists" later this year to highlight their high levels of copyright piracy. Piracy over the Internet, as opposed to the unauthorized copying and selling of optical discs, is a growing concern as broadband Internet access increases globally, Smith said. "China, for example, will have more broadband users than the United States in 2007," he said. The alliance represents over 1,900 companies, including high-tech and software firms such as Microsoft, Apple Inc, and Cisco Systems, as well as motion picture and recording industry companies, such as Time Warner Inc. and News Corp's Twentieth Century Fox.

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 26 April 2007 :- 11 arrested in raid against CD piracy ============================ National police chief General Seripisut Temiyavej led a raid by officers against piracy and arrested 11 piracy suspects, seizing more than 140,000 counterfeit CDs in three locations in Nonthaburi's Bang Kruay district yesterday. Carrying a search warrant, Seripisut and Lt-Colonel Visut Vanichbutr of the economic and cyber-crime division led simultaneous raids at 7am on three houses. In Tambon Wat Chalor, four suspects were arrested at the first location along with CD burners and 60,000 counterfeit CDs, while three more suspects were nabbed along with CD burners and 80,000 fake CDs at the second house. In Tambon Bang Kruay, another four suspects were apprehended and a printing machine and some 100,000 counterfeit CD covers were seized. The seized counterfeit CDs included music records and movies from Thai and foreign companies and a number of pornographic films. Seripisut said the arrests - a crackdown on the biggest CD piracy network - were part of police policy to eradicate counterfeit CDs and pornographic media in Thailand. He gave importance to the issue following patent-breaching complaints filed by Thai artists and producers. Police would extend the arrests to other network members, as none of those arrested had admitted to owning the three houses, saying they were just employees, he said. Producing and distributing counterfeit CDs is punishable by two years in jail and/or up to a Bt400,000 fine. Deputy Prime Minister and Social Development and Human Security Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham, who also joined the raids, said counterfeit CDs posed a serious social problem as they could damage the economy and hurt business operators, while pornographic media caused problems among youths. Later yesterday at a meeting on safe media, he urged city officials to join forces in curbing pornographic media at eight areas in Greater Bangkok including Pantip Plaza, Silom, Khlong Thom, Ban Mor, Sear Rangsit Shopping Mall, Future Park Rangsit, Tawanna and Saphan Phut Night Market.
