Khao San Road's the place to go -- one bit of advice, do not bother trying to get a fake ID from the UK. He'll get busted for sure using that.

Suggest he look for an ID from some former colonies, or such - like British Guyana, or The Republic of Ghana.

That way, it can serve as a 'novelty ID', but chances are the bouncers at the clubs will have no clue what that kind of ID really looks like, and will let him get in (especially if he adopts some exotic accent).

So, you're not going to have him hang out with you, and show him the ropes? What kind of Dad are you

yet all the way up and down Sukhumwit you can buy pirated and illegal music CDs all day long???
You need to make your appropriate payments to stay in business. Simple as that.

"Sudawadi Komonwit, 25, was arrested at the same time as another second-hand-CD vendor Somchai Nanthawanit - who was jailed because he couldn't pay the Bt100,000 fine until Pol General Pongsapat Pongcharoen covered the fine and got him released.

Sudawadi's parents have also asked for Pongsapat's help. The court found the defendant guilty of selling copyrighted CDs without permission. But since she had no previous criminal record, her family is poor and she is a student with no income, the court gave her a suspended jail term, promising to keep her record clean if she reports to police as required. "

Something I don't understand there. The police chief covered the 100,000 baht fine and got the other guy released ? Why would a cop cover a 100,000 baht fine for a roadside vendor ? I am assuming "covered" in this instance means paying up or standing guarantee for the accused. Do courts really impose such unaffordable fines on vendors, who are clearly out on a limb, for acts like selling second-hand (not porn) CDs ?

A student sells second-hand copyrighted CDs (the elite class newspaper alleges fake) to probably pay for her fees and she gets hauled in and the newspaper makes a big report of it ? The Sudawadis and Somchais are not unaware that on the streets of their own city far worse crimes are allowed to go on unpunished. Makes me wonder sometimes if these inequities are an example of what is at the root of the simmering Thai tensions.

I think US is pushing for more actions. Thailand has to show that they are taking actions.

That's really all it is - you are right.

Can't arrest the nephew of the police commandant, so let's arrest some unknown anonymous student, instead.

The saddest part is that the US and MPAA agents in all of this actually believe they are making a difference, when they parade a couple of hundred DVDs in front of them, and 'promise' them that thus piracy has been dealt a death blow.

That is to say that the Thais assume that the US could be so simply impressed by employing a steamroller to crush a schoolgirl when hundreds of vendors are openly selling pirated goods (not just CDs) in KS, Suk, Silom, Pantip and all the high-visibility tourist areas. I would think that those are the places where the cops would enact their impressive stuff if they had their eyes on the US. Or was the schoolgirl being taught a lesson for encroaching on the fake mafia's territory ?

thailand won't be thailand without the fake products. Even if government bans pirated products, there will still be the hot thai girls, so not an issue for me. Don;t know about others
