In spite of my numerous trips in LOS, I have a bad knowledge about shopping, except summer clothes, jewellery for my former thaļ wife and some accidental purchase same spectacles. My question here is : Is it a good bargain to buy a mobile phone whitout package, only to put my french SIM card inside ? Somebody has told here that an average mobile is at 8000 Baht, which is the same price that in Paris when you have some sales. The only benefit seems to find some exotic modele you can not have in Europe or for me in France ! And may be with the problem that french language will not be available.

Be gentle with me gang. Think I have read enough to understand getting a used phone and simm. What it the secret to keeping the number valid if it is as long as maybe 8 months between trips.

For 1-2-call, I believe that would take 8 top-ups at 300 baht. However, the maximum expiry is 6 months (I think) from the last top-up, so you will have to do at least a few of the top-up's over a period of time. Why not just get a new SIM chip 8 months later when you come back? DrLove and rtb, 6 months after I bought that shirt, it still fits but the girl has disappeared.

Ah, friend Aircrest, the solution is simple (and listen up, CG, on this as well). Be sure to activate INTERNATIONAL ROAMING on your 1-2-Call SIM card, while you are in BKK. This will then allow you to not only check your balance with a text message while abroad, but it will also allow you to top up from abroad, thus allowing you to circumvent the expiry issue of your number. Just make sure you stock up on additional phone cards before leaving (or have friends bring them back from Thailand), and perform a fresh top up a few days before the expiry. Be aware that there are TWO different and distinct expiry dates - the expiration of your NUMBER (which is advanced every time you top up), and the expiration of your credits, which it would be a shame to lose - and that's my major reason to regularly top up. Hope this helps, Harry

A few 'one-2-call' pre-paid SIM follow-on questions: How do I enable International Roaming? (call customer service?) How do I check my balance via SMS? (what sort of msg do I send, to which number?) How do I top-up outside of Thailand? (what number do I dial?) I read that you can get lower international rates from Thailand dialing a '900' prefix? If so do you just dial '900' followed by the country code, dropping the leading '+'? Thanks

Some answers: To enable roaming, call 1-2-call customer service 02-271-9000 *121# then SEND to check your balance in Thailand and while roaming *120*13digit-top-up-number# then SEND to top up your phone (not 100% sure if this works while roaming There are three ways I know of to make an international call from a 1-2-call phone while in Thailand. - 001-country code then number - 009-country code then number - plus sign (+) then country code then number (I think this is the same rate as dialing 001) Sometimes 1-2-call has promotions that make the 009 rate cheaper than the 001 or plus. SOmetime the promotions make the 001 cheaper. I always email the Call Center before I go, or cal them when I arrive in Thailand to find out what the cheapest method is for the time that I am there. I have had excellent response when I send customer service an email with a question, I have always got an answer within a day. Email: callcenter@ais.co.th - any other questions, just email them or call them 02-271-9000
