Now I know why I've been away from the forum for so long... Jackrabbit, for someone that has surpassed the 1000 mark for posts, I thought you'd know better. Is no one safe to post a simple friggin' question without getting an assinine "know better than thou" reply? First and foremost, I don't need "security conscious" types telling me about how to handle myself in LOS. Anyone buying a solid gold knockoff and wearing it around any place in SE Asia deserves to be harassed. I have been traveling to LOS off and on for the last 15 years and will be there in a matter of days. The only time I indulge in getting the knock-off watches is when someone asks me as a favor. As the one asking this time happens to be one of my clients' sons, I decided to ask a question based on a thread started by someone who actually appears to know what he's talking about. What I don't need are responses which contribute nothing and just pisses off a brother of the board since early last year! So, if you've got something helpful to say, welcome, if not -

If some one posts an opinion you don't agree with, and it is not a personal attack, then just ignore it. No reason to get upset about a watch.
Even though your situation may be that buying a fake Rolex is the right thing to do as you explained, our responses my be helpful to someone else who is thinking about wearing a fake Rolex in a less appropriate situation.

Mr. Alan, you obviously like taking the higher moral ground so let me make this short and clear. It was not the "watch" that got me spun up, it was the tone and attitude coming through in your response to a question not even addressed to you. If I was a newbie to this sight and saw your comments, I'd either ignore it or just think, "what a another nasty shithead response" and look for something that actually makes sense and is helpful. You trying to be "helplful" by telling adult travelers not to wear flashy jewelry/watches on the streets in Asia, is about as patronizing as telling travelers to LOS not to fall for working TG's (e.g. no need to be said, man, it's already understood).....

I think you may be overstating the case more than a little.
But let me be clear. I wouldn't wear a fake Rolex anywhere in the world. In a place that was actually safe, it would be more likely to be spotted it as a fake, which in some circles is worse than getting mugged.
But again, no malice was intended and lets not overreact.

MBK Update~ Thought I might have a look as some of the better quality knock-offs on the 1st floor of MBK. Turned out I could find no retailers of knock-offs on the groundfloor at all. Next, I went up to 2nd and tried my luck. No luck. Finally I ask one of the swatch watch vendor carts. He points me up to the 3rd floor. Opposite Valentine Music Shop and the car park entrance, on the Hotel side of the mall is the Burapa Watch Shop, tel. 0-1851-4040, they back up next to the atruim, their stand is done up in a soft jade color. All their best knock-offs are out of sight and you must ask to see them. Around the edges fo their counters they have catalog cut-outs of highend watches in stock. Nice staff. I dealt with Neung, kinda standoffish at 1st, but warmed up nicely later. Realy wanted to make a sale today, and gave me a substantial discount as a result.
Told me all their stuff comes out of Taiwan. I didn't look at Rolex but the Tag Huer models in stock looked to be very old models (so I think) and limited in choice. Had some nice Bvlgari watches in stock at 2 very different price quotes 2800baht and 5500 baht. She said they were from different factories within Taiwan. Go figure! Also some Vacheron & Constantine models.

So what did you end up buying and what did you pay/final discount offered? Did you see any differences between the 2 grades of Bvlgaris?
I've bought in the past an acceptable Panerai Luminor knockoff from a vendor in the market beside the Mall in Bangkapi for THB2000 (bargained down from 2800). Acceptable to me means that the watch looked OK, was of sufficiently substantial heft, the glass did not scratch easily (they claim it's sapphire, maybe it is maybe it's just hardened mineral, but the vendor willingly keyed several other models on display with no scratches) and that everything worked the way it was supposed to e.g dates; can't vouch for the authenticity quotient as I've not compared them side-by-side to an original.

Skip, thanks for the update. Was about to hit MBK plaza for other things (portbale dvd players, mobiles etc.), but it's good to know about the watch dealers there. I too, would be interested in what price range the Bvalgaris were.
