It's quite funny when people talk about a certain shop being the best for quality and work, it's almost as though they have had clothes from all..... The truth is these shops are actually just sales outlets. These Indian guys are NOT tailors, they are salesman and fabric distributors. They are all using the same tailors to do their work. You make the order and the design and then choose your material. The real tailor who is Thai then comes to collect all this and takes it away to as Thai sweatshop where they do the work. They all use the same people. There is a big tailors sweatshop at the back of soi 11 that does the suits, another place does the shirts. There of course are several different ones, but the best ones are identified and the outlet shops all want to use them. Essentially, shop A listed as crap is probably getting the clothes made by the same tailor as shop B which gets a glowing review. The most successful tailor in the Sukhumvit area is the one next to NEP, forget the name, he has the highest turnover of all, because he has links to the embassies and makes clothes for them and all their guests.

Yurune, you probably mean Raja's -- their store has the photos inside showing them with embassy staff, etc. If what you say is true about where the clothes get made, then perhaps the differentiator would be picking higher quality fabic to begin with and making sure you work with a tailor who will allow you to do multiple fittings to be sure the end product hands well. I had some French-cuff dress shirts made at Raja's last year. They came out well; Raja steered my to a better quality fabric for the shirts (they have a fairly good collection of fabrics for shirts, but not all the skanks are of the same quality -- you have to ask). - Balls

Rajawongse: His back wall is a veritable whose who of American politicians and military personnel- if they've got name recognition you can find them on the back wall dressing room. I was amazed some of the business cards posted didn't have their sensitive information blocked out. 5555 Anyway, I don't really care if the machines are up the stairs or down a soi, if they've sewn it to my design, sewn it well, and done so at a fair price then I'm happy.

I had a suit and some shirts tailored there and wasn’t impressed. Especially the customer service was below par. Their “first-name-basis” congeniality was so faked it made me feel uncomfortable. You just know that these dodgy bastards are running a sweatshop with little Thai kids behind their store.

Had several suits and some slacks and shirts made by Raja. Was happy with the quality and fit, but agree with Hypers about the "friendliness" factor. A little weird, as if you are old buddies. Found a good tailor in Ploenchit center, Arrow, I think was the name, had a tux made there and was pleased. Last time I stopped by the shop was missing in action. What's up with all the business's folding at Ploenchit center?? Seems like a good location but the shops disappear faster than then a speeding bullet... (question to myself)

I've had some suits and a whole bunch of shirts made at the store next to Rajas. It's called Taj Mahal. My experiences have been mixed but I guess it's largely due to my deficiences, rather than their faults. As someone said, they all use the same tailors to do the work - the success or failure of your product is down to what you tell them to do. First time round, I had no idea about getting a tailored suit. They directed me and while the outcome was tons better than off-the-rack, it didnt feel as special as I thought it would. Second batch of suits was a vast improvement. I discovered I prefered them more snug fitting and directed them as such. I told them I preferred the jacket cuff buttons to be real buttons and buttonholes, not fake. Basically, you get what you ask for. The shirts have been less successful. No problems with the fit or the fabric, but have had problems with some of the buttons coming off after a few months. Overall though, I'd go back to them.

Quote: from viking77 on 10:12 am on June 8, 2005 I have used DINO on Sukhumwit for years now, the shop across from Robinson Dept. store and next to Sheraton Grande. They have a second shop on Sukhumvit closer to Nana MTR, but I use the small one. The Quality is good, honest people and never had a complaint. You can get cheaper packages from other but I rather pay a little bit more and be sure that the fabric is good. Suit from 7000 to 12.000 depending on fabric, trouser about 1200 to 1600. You will notice they actually make their clothes themselves, (2nd floor) whereas many other shops takes order and then have a central sewing shop where they get the work done.
So if you don't want to use the "factory" it's worthwhile referrin' y'all to Mr. Viking77's post (see above!). Cheerio

Thanks for that refresher, Brocher, I'm past that store nearly every day. Something about the appearance never fails to whisper 'quality' in my ear as I go by. I'll have to pop in and place an order now to see for myself.

I've been coming to BKK for 10 years and have tried at least 5 tailors. The best is Gulati Fashions, corner of Sukhumvit & Soi 3. Go see Sam. You pay a little more, and it takes a little longer, but its worth it. They have their own tailor upstairs and the fittings are precise. Customer service is first rate too.
