Dr Love and I visited Siam Paragon on 31 Dec. As said before in this thread, its a shopping mall - no real reason to go out of your way to visit for shopping.

We wanted to get something to eat. Wandered around most of the mall. Finally, duh, looked at the directory to find that all eating places are on the G floor. Wandering did allow us to confirm that it is an uninspiring shopping center.

G floor is COMPLETELY packed with people eating or trying to find a spot to eat - and this is at 2pm. Takes us probably 20 minutes to find a table to sit down at near the Burger King. Food is uninspiring as well, its a food court with typical BKK food court food. There is also a Japanese section with sit down areas reserved for the specific restaurant.

We also looked down the stairwell to the bottom floor and saw that it was fully packed with people trying to get into the Aquarium. In fact, you could not go down the escalator from G floor to the bottom floor since there was a monitor person trying to regulate the traffic flow and tell people that it was 450bt/person. The announcement of the price did not seem to cause anyone in that crowd from waiting to get into the Aquarium.

We didn't partake.

Went there yesterday. A few observations:

1. The food center seems to be the only store where the Thai's are actually buying. Packed to the gills. I would recommend against it unless you like crowds. I went to the Greyhound Cafe on the 1st floor and plenty of tables and nice quiet atmosphere.

2. The SONY Style store has higher prices for the same items that are carried by the Siam Paragon Department Store ???

3. I do not know who did the building engineering, but the air conditioning flow is terrible. With the glass wall you got hot spots all over the place where as other spots are like a refridgerator. Addtionally, coming down the escalators of the department store one can smell the very strong odor of sewer!! Again bad air flow probably with the non-use of P-traps in the plumbing really stinking up the place. Maybe a marketing ploy to get you to buy perfume, well it worked on me.

4. The elusive item to find in Thailand is a napkin holder, you would think next to their Gucci bags, wearing their Channel perfume arriving in their Lambourghini's the Thai's would want some type of fancy napkin holders on the dining table (the ones that cost 485K THB on the 4th floor), but no it is still a roll of toilet paper. I did see some fancy toilet paper holders for the dining room table and maybe that what that smell was from, somebody forgetting to empty the bins of used toilet paper.

Overall a good selection of merchandise, but make sure you have one of those inhalers and bring a sweater for your TG that she can put on and take off depending where you go.

I guess Gayson can put its stuff and close now soon then. I will be going there and check the new WOW fitenss center out since I can move around the clubs. I like the thai marketing "train with the super stars" that is all the soap starts they can squuuuuese in one photo and never come back.

Actually many Thai actresses (aka "super stars" ) do regularly exercise at the CA WOW on Soi 23, but I do would not a Thai movie actresses is she was standing next to me. My TGF points them out, but with the make-up, good lighting and professional direction most would give them a miss, not that impressive. IMHO.

Road in front of Siam Paragon to be off-limited to private vehicles
________________________________________________________

Traffic police are planning to declare a portion of Rama I Road off-limits to private vehicles, as a measure to reduce traffic jam that is getting worse following the opening of Siam Paragon shopping complex last month.

Police Major Pairach Pukcharoen, the traffic police chief of Pathumwan Police Station, Sunday disclosed that his station was going to propose that only public buses were allowed on the portion of Rama I Road between Pong Phraram Intersection to Rajprasong Intersection.

"The Rama I Road already has so many vehicles on weekdays, but the traffic comes to crawling pace on weekends. The traffic conditions are like this until the shopping centre close," Pairach said.

He said his station would submit the proposal to the Metropolitan Police Bureau soon.

My Uni Girls also pointed one out, right near WOW. I had the same thoughts as you - not that impressive. In fact, I told them that THEY looked better than she did. (Flattery never hurts.)

My Uni Girls and I went to "Ocean World" yesterday, the Aquarium in the basement of Siam Paragon.

450bt each - although I tried to get one of them in as a kid . Didn't work.

If you've been to any good Aquarium you've seen the same stuff. We took about 1 1/2 hours to go through, although you could do it quicker. There is no "star" of the exhibit, like the Leafy Sea Dragon at Aqua (Perth, Australia), the Albino Crocodile of the Sydney Aquarium in Darling Harbor, the Sea Otters of the Monterey, California Aquarium, etc.

I will say that the English descriptions on each exhibit were fantastic. Better English than anywhere else in Thailand that I have seen. I pointed this out to the girls and one of them said "Yes, because we stole from American Aquarium" and then laughed.

There was a walk-through tunnel, but it was not very impressive. Probably because the one in Sydney has a hugh hammerhead shark that seems to make its home on top of the tunnel there - now THAT'S impressive.

Several of the tanks were very cloudy. At least 2 of the tanks had dead fish. The girls said they had read where the Aquarium was having problems keeping some of the fish alive.

They had a "petting" area, where you could pet starfish and the like. The girls enjoyed that. There were a couple of places that you could buy snack food.

We went on a Sunday. Not very crowded - and about 1/2 of the people were foreigners.

As we left, one of the girls was handed a bag of chili potato chips. The other one wanted a bag, but the girl said "only one to a family group". We burst out laughing - the 3 of us a family group.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 8 February 2006 :-

Mikimoto (Thailand) opens at Siam Paragon
===============================

Mikimoto, the 110-year-old Japanese maker of pearl jewellery, has made a spectacular entry into the Thai jewellery market by opening a flagship store in the Siam Paragon shopping complex in the name of a new joint venture, Mikimoto (Thailand) Co Ltd.

It is Mikimoto’s biggest flagship store in Southeast Asia, occupying 180 square metres and offering a full range of jewellery, including bracelets, necklaces, rings, pens, watches, key holders and photo frames.

Mikimoto (Thailand) is a joint venture between the renowned Japanese parent company and Thailand’s Premier Diamond Cutting Co Ltd, one of the world’s leading diamond cutters.

The Thai company’s wide reputation helped to create the joint venture. It is the first time Mikimoto has joined with a local partner in a foreign market.

Premier Diamond Cutting claims to be the only company in Thailand with the ability to order raw diamonds for cutting here from Diamond Trading Co in the UK, the rough-diamond marketing arm of the De Beers Group, which serves jewellery manufacturers around the world.

Achariya Inkatanuvat, marketing manager for Mikimoto (Thailand), said that although it was just entering the Thai market, the Mikimoto brand had long been recognised in Thailand by customers ranging from teenagers to high-income earners. Product prices range from the thousands to the millions of baht.

Achiraya said the joint-venture partners planned to arrange events and workshops to educate the public on how to recognise high-quality jewellery and display the jewellery and other products on offer in the store.

It is hoped that the workshops will dispel perceptions that Mikimoto’s designs are obsolete.

The partners are not worried about intense competition - particularly within Siam Paragon - because all shops have their own character, matching different customers’ desires.

Achariya declined to reveal either the level of investment in the joint venture and its flagship store or expected revenue figures, but said both partners were confident about strong performance in their first year, because Thais were always willing to spend money on jewellery.

Dive with the sharks in the centre of Bangkok : New attraction for Siam Ocean World
=============================================

Bangkok has become one of Thailand's dive spots with the introduction by Siam Ocean World, the aquarium located underneath the Siam Paragon shopping centre, of a 'Dive with the Sharks' programme.

Geoff Olson, general manager of Siam Ocean World Co, said the programme was a collaboration between Planet Scuba, a Bangkok-based diving centre, and Mares, an international diving-equipment brand.

''We guarantee that divers will encounter more than 20 sharks such as ragged-tooth, leopard, ornate wobbegong and black-tipped reef sharks,'' said Mr Olson.

All divers will be covered by insurance.

The fee is 5,300 baht for experienced divers. Beginners who have dived less than 10 times are charged 6,000 baht since they need a short tune-up session before entering the shark tank, while those who have never dived are charged an extra 600 baht for complete orientation, said Robin Lloyd, director of Planet Scuba.

Thousands of tourists are expected to participate in the programme annually, said Mr Olson.

The Oceanis Australia Group, which operates Siam Ocean World, offers the same programme at its aquarium in Melbourne, Australia.

Since its launch two months ago, Siam Ocean World has attracted 370,000 visitors, 80% of whom are Thais.

Mr Lloyd believes Siam Ocean World will inspire beginner divers to seek more experience in other destinations later on. He said the Bangkok aquarium is now a unique selling point of his diving firm as it is the only diving centre that offers real diving experience in the heart of Bangkok.

Mr Lloyd's Planet Scuba also operates in Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

''About 50 dive shops that are our retailers came to see the opening of the Dive with the Sharks programme, and they will sell diving packages at Siam Ocean World to their customers,'' said Mr Lloyd.

The programme is expected to help increase the demand for diving equipment and other diving services in the country, said Vittorio Trusso, area manager for Asia of HTM Sport, a distributor of Mares diving equipment.

Mr Trusso said Thailand was a fast-growing market for Mares, with an average annual growth rate of almost 10%, compared to 3.25% elsewhere. In Europe, which is the company's key market, the growth rate is flat.

Following the tsunami, demand for diving equipment in Thailand dropped and has just begun to recover. This year, he expects the growth of Mares sales in Thailand to be 5%, and increase to 10% again in 2007.

Thailand contributes about 3% to Mares sales worldwide, while the whole of Asia makes up 17% of its revenue.

US firm brings smile maintenance to Siam
=============================================

The spa business is booming, with body, ear, and even teeth spas cropping up everywhere.

The US-based BriteSmile Inc, which is recognised as one of the world's leading whitening systems, has joined up with Accord Corporation Co of Thailand, a distributor of imported dental equipment, to launch the first teeth-spa service in Bangkok.

Saranya Chungsuvanich, spa director at BriteSmile Whitening Spa (Thailand) Co, said the firm recently opened its first outlet in Asia and the 19th outlet in the world at Siam Paragon shopping centre.

''The shop is not a dental clinic at all, no teeth pulling or teeth filling will be seen, there will not even be the smell of medicine,'' she said.

BriteSmile offers a revolutionary breakthrough in teeth-whitening services. It gives customers a simple way to dramatically whiten their teeth with a blue-spectrum, light-based whitening process in one hour without laser.

The company charges customers about 18,000 baht for the treatment, which is expected to maintain results for an average of two years, depending on individual oral care.

BriteSmile does not only provide the teeth-whitening service, but also offers a full line of smile-maintenance products, including a 600-baht whitening toothpaste and a 600-baht alcohol-free mouthwash. Sugar-free chewing gum and branded toothbrushes will also be available in the future.

Currently, BriteSmile has more than 5,000 associated centres located throughout 60 countries in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia.

BriteSmile sells its teeth-whitening technology to dental offices in several countries in Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong.

No idea what te BriteSmile advertisement has to do with the Siam Paragon, but whatever....

I can confirm that it will not be long until millions of little vendors/stands will invade Siam Paragon (that, or it shuts its doors) - I was there last week, and the place was absolutely deserted the 2 times I was there (during the week, and weekend), which makes sense since the 'shopping experience' is entirely out of reach of most Thais - aside from being extremely uninsipiring, and sporting rather sterile interior design. Quite boring, really.

The only place that was moderately inhabited and frequented by patrons was a far too small Starbucks (2nd or 3rd floor, I believe, next to some modern kitchen store).

What was packed was the lowest level/floor (G, I believe) where the food courts and the supermarket were located. The environment and atmosphere was 'marine' inspired (aquaria surrounded tables), the food was the average fare, and prices were reasonable. The supermarket appears to be catering to higher end markets/demographics, but was reasonable enough for more folks to shop in it. Really nice supermarket, as things go. Excellent gourmet food section.

Overall, though, disappointing - I would expect that small vendors/stands will soon invade Siam Paragon, at least once the high end stores start closing up shop, whenever their leases expire.

Nice architcture, though, if somewhat unoriginal.
