Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 28 February 2012 :-

50,000 pirated items seized in store raid
==============================

The Department of Special Investigation has seized almost 50,000 pirated movies, albums and computer games worth an estimated 5 million baht from a shop in downtown Nakhon Ratchasima.

Officers raided the TM3 shop in The Mall department store following a complaint by movie supplier United Home Entertainment Co Ltd.

A further 8,400 pirated discs were also seized from the shop's production site in a house behind Marie Vithaya School in Muang district, Col Piyawat Kingket, chief of intellectual property cases at the DSI, said.

Col Piyawat said the gang is also a major wholesaler of pirated movies in the Northeast and usually sells disks to traders and stores in Buri Ram and Surin provinces.

Meanwhile, the Intellectual Property Department is warning that Thai internet users may be blocked by the US from gaining access to foreign online programmes or movies if the country fails to deal with the piracy problem.

Department chief Patchima Thonsanti said the US's Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), now before lawmakers, would allow courts to order internet service providers to block access to websites containing pirated material.

(Actually, US legislators shelved and probably abandoned SOPA last month after a worldwide online protest, including many sites going offline for a day.)

The US is also expected to decide on Thailand's status concerning piracy on April 30, Ms Patchima said. Each year, the US issues a report on piracy worldwide, and once again will decide whether to keep Thailand on a list of the world's worst pirate nations.

One way to tackle piracy is to push for a law preventing piracy on the internet, she said.

This would help her department and the DSI crack down more effectively on piracy, which costs more than 3.5 billion baht a year in lost earnings.

Technological advances have made production of pirated movies and music relatively easy, Ms Patchima said.

"Ban Mo and Khlong Thom are known to be major production and sales bases of these products," she said.

The areas are considered "red zones" for pirated products which require serious attention from the police if they are to tackle the problem.

In a fresh effort to curb intellectual property-related crimes, the Royal Thai Police has launched a policy to have each police station make at least two piracy-related arrests a month, Ms Patchima said.

So if no more pirated CD are made avalaible in Thailand, it mean all the Thai who buy them now are going to suddenly have the money to buy the same quantity of non-pirated cd?
Really?
Time to wake up DSI & co...

... pretty hopeful, THAT is... there are plenty of Thai laws... the problem is that Thai society as a whole (including the Royal Thai Police and the Royal Thai Judiciary), do not respect rule of law, nor do they enforce laws.

... it's a problem about which Thais seem unable or unwilling to solve.

... will be interesting to see if Thailand once again merits the US's elite list of 15-20 of the world's worst pirating nations.

... yet, another "Thailand - Hub of [fill in the blank]."

Same old script.......hookers on beach road arrested....

Bars raided....hookers located on Soi six ( pattaya)

Crack down on close times......

Crack down on fakes

Bare breasted woman in Songran charged......"Thais affronted"

But don't we need this perfect storm in some 3rd world country of ignorance, greed, and tolerance ?

Look in some parts of Thailand especially upcountry.....Thais believe...Products like

Nescafé..... Ponds....and a galaxy of face creams. ( beauty)....Colgate.....And even American petrol companies are all Thai.........I got 77 brands that Thais believed arrogantly (dispite claims) that were theirs

It's a society that's insular.....and tolerant of any practice that equates to Thais taking western money.....

We are seen as inferior.

The big monkeys who love....and pay...

Self delusion is a Thai trait.

Thais are close to the day...that they have to man up and be part of the world.......

Give it 20 years and the whore factory...may even be unground......so careful what you wish

Ps ask a Thai hooker what she thinks of western woman....ironically most feel they are immoral

I recall many conversations over 15 years on this topic..

The most amusing was a girl with cum all over her face saying while looking up at some MTV video and calling farang woman very bad and "like f***"

... Thais take a lot of criticism from farang who observe from up-close their behaviors... me, you, other forum members here, http://www.thaivisa.com, and elsewhere.

... but, maybe the most authoritative, frank, and illuminating descriptions of Thai society I EVER heard was by a Thai behavioral psychologist, advanced degrees from a respected US university and practiced behavorial psychology clinically in the US for a number of years.

... she returned to Thailand where she counsels troubled Thai adolescents... I had her counseling a deeply damaged young girl, which involved me getting guidance on with what we were dealing.

... she described the Thai people, as a whole, as "psychologically ill people", victims of a mass psychology.

... she was just fascinating, describing Thai behaviors in clinical terms... I wish I had taped our sessions... she even confided that she was fearful to have and raise children here because the cultural influence is so pervasive.

... she put into perspective for me the sociological consequences of Thai cultural values... eg, the passification for generations of the Thai people.

... what a book this woman could write!

Report from The Nation dated 12 April 2012 :-

Severe penalties for copyright violations in works
====================================

As a serious attempt to crack down on copycat goods, the Commerce Ministry aims to increase the penalties, through both imprisonment and fines, for traders in illegal products.

The amendment to the Copyright Act will allow fines for illegal goods on an item-by-item basis instead of the current fines of between Bt100,000 and Bt600,000. Those convicted could also face jail terms of between six months and four years. In addition, the imprisonment will not wait for suspending jail anymore.

The move is aimed at eliminating the trade in counterfeit products. The Intellectual Property Department will propose the amendment to the Cabinet soon, Deputy Commerce Minister Poom Sarapol said yesterday.

"The government needs to launch stringent punishments under the Copyright Act so that illegal traders will be afraid to sell the fake goods," he said.

Moreover, the ministry targets reducing infringements of IP rights by 80 per cent this year compared with the 2003 figure.

Pajchima Tanasanti, director-general of the department, said piracy should diminish as the government has serious attempted to crack down on violations.

A special task force of the Royal Thai Police for suppressing IP violations was set up recently. The team on Wednesday (April 11) immediately Yesterday it arrested several illegal-goods traders at MBK Center and in Pratunam, seizing 10,000 items.

Pajchima said this special team would regularly inspect places that have been reported for selling illegal goods.

In addition, after many years of attempting to reduce infringements, the department will soon upgrade Panthip Plaza and Sukhumvit Road from being categorised as red zones for having |a high rate of IP violations to yellow zone. These two areas are now highly developed, as landlords have been encouraged to allow only sales of legal goods.

The Royal Thai Police, the Department of Special Investigation, and the Customs Department reported that 10,453 cases involving IP infringements were dealt with and about 4.86 million illegal products were seized last year.

The fight against piracy is region-wide. To increase awareness and crack down on IP violation, Thailand and the other nine Asean members have jointly drafted a four-year plan to impose IP-enforcement measures from this year to 2015.

Under the plan, it will establish an Asean IPR Enforcement Coordination Centre.

Yeah right, as if that will be enforced. If it is, look for about 32 booths to be available at Pantip soon, on all but the very top floor...lolol.

It gets me how every single legitimate computer seller in all of Thailand will load windows OS for free, it just can't be updated, or you can buy a legit copy that can be update, and they will load that.

It would be good if they also targeted brand name pirated clothing then most of the sidewalks would clear of everything but food.

I see it as just another way to collect higher pay-offs the first of the month. All prices have gone up so pirated goods have to be publisized again so the pay-offs can go up to meet inflation.
