Siam Ocean World defends its record
=============================================

Touted as the country's largest aquarium, Siam Ocean World has admitted that its 30,000-odd species of fish and marine life are being looked after by a solitary veterinarian.

Siam Ocean World was yesterday inspected by police from the Natural Resources and Environment-related Crime Division, led by Maj-General Latthasanya Pieansom-parn. Assistant curator Ross Werner admitted that though the animal husbandry team numbered 19, there was only one full-time vet working at the aquarium. But he said there were two other marine experts, including himself, to help take care of the marine exhibits.

Werner said the aquarium also had connections with marine experts in many other countries who helped as consultants. Since it opened in December, Siam Ocean World has received numerous complaints about the poor quality of its care for the marine life. Many fish are reported to have died.

Marketing manager Kantaporn Tongman said the fatality rate of the displayed fishes was at an "acceptable level" in that less than 10 per cent of the fish had died, and most of that was during transportation.

The latest case that caused concern among many marine biologists was the death of a giant grouper from eating a plastic ball as big as a ping-pong ball, which was accidentally released through the water treatment equipment. Werner promised it would not happen again.

The aquarium was also questioned about the origin of its displayed fish. After inspecting the aquarium, Latthasanya said he did not see any protected species for which an aquarium operator would need permission from the Fishery Department. He added that it was legal for anyone to own unprotected marine species as long as they were not caught in a marine park.

"That is something that is impossible to prove since fish can be anywhere in the sea, unless [the collectors] are caught red-handed and arrested," he said.

Kantaporn said the aquarium had bought marine life from many places in the world. In Thailand, it had only bought some small beautiful fish from two agents, but she did not know where they had acquired them.

"We only asked them not to do anything illegal," she said.

Protesters to put down stakes at Siam Paragon
=============================================

The rally against caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will shift to Bangkok's newest upmarket shopping complex, Siam Paragon, the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) announced yesterday. Chamlong Srimuang, a PAD leader, said a permanent rally would begin outside Siam Paragon, on Rama I road near Siam Square, on Wednesday at 5pm.

Only a small group of demonstrators, mainly members of the Dharma Army, would continue to occupy the area in front of Government House, he said.

The PAD said the new rally venue was a good location, as the skytrain would provide shade from the scorching sun for demonstrators who would also have access to toilets, restaurants and the shopping complex.

The PAD would ask police to close off some traffic lanes leading to the site. Demonstrators would camp in front of Siam Paragon.

''We want our rally to cater to people in Siam Square who may dislike Mr Thaksin but cannot join the rally on Ratchadamnoen avenue,'' said a PAD leader.

The shift of venue followed a march yesterday which was attended by thousands of anti-Thaksin protesters.

The burning heat failed to deter the demonstrators, who took their rally from Government House to the popular shopping streets. Led by the PAD, the march left the National Stadium about 10am.

Flags and anti-Thaksin banners were flying while the boisterous chant ''Thaksin, get out'' could be heard from Rama I to Sukhumvit roads as the demonstrators made their way to the Siam Paragon, Central World and Emporium department stores.

Police closed traffic on one side of the road to make way for the march. The crowd, many wearing yellow and white ''save the nation'' headbands, gradually built up from about 10,000 people at the start to about 100,000, according to organisers.

PAD leaders on an open truck called for bystanders to join the march, while stepping up calls for a royally-appointed prime minister to end the political crisis.

They called on people to gather again in front of Siam Paragon on Wednesday.

''Our protest has been going for more than six months. We have been absent from work for many days. Now I beg you for two more days,'' said Maj-Gen Chamlong.

''Please meet here on Wednesday and Thursday. We'll be camping here. If we turn out in large numbers, he [Mr Thaksin] will have to leave eventually.''

There was brief confusion after the procession turned left into Ratchaprasong road in front of Central World department store, when protest leaders told the crowd to disband.

Some demonstrators informed the leaders a large crowd was waiting for them at the Emporium on Sukhumvit road.

As the PAD leaders moved ahead on their open truck, some demonstrators took the skytrain to catch the procession and meet the crowd at the Emporium. They still shouted ''Thaksin, get out'' while boarding the skytrain.

One protester, who gave her name as Pat and said she was a 42-year-old businesswoman, said she would continue to attend the rally until Mr Thaksin quit.

''It's tiring indeed, but I'm still happy doing this for the country. I am proud to be part of the movement,'' she said.

The people were not demonstrating for the sake of Maj-Gen Chamlong or Sondhi Limthongkul, but in the nation's interest.

Arunee Noibua-ngarm, 34, who came from Chon Buri, said she joined the rally only on Saturday night.

''The protest is prolonged, but the prime minister still refuses to resign. So I'm here to join them, hoping the crowd will become large enough to oust him.''

Kamolporn Chalermcharoenrat, 37, who lives in Sukhumvit Soi 36, said yesterday's rally was her first. She found it was ''fun, peaceful and harmless''.

''State television hardly reported the rally. So I have to come out to see it for myself,'' she said.

Privy Council chairman Gen Prem Tinsulanonda said he would take the proposal on article 7, which includes a call for a royally-appointed government, for consideration.

Must have been one hell of a lot joining at Asoke......I'd be very generous and say there was 20,000 when I saw them.

That's the difference with being there....true facts instead of ill informed cut and pastes.....

I estimated....not counted....when you have been in many sporting crowds of 100,000, 50,000, 30,000 etc it is quite easy to estimate that the crowd that walked down Sukhumvit was somewhat less.

Having taken arial photographs of the event, I am able to make some sort of estimate as to how many people are passing a point per minute, hence the fact that it took only about 10 minutes to pass, not even close to filling less than two lanes, in fact at some points, very sparcely populated..

As I said I was being very generous with an estimate of 20,000, I myself would have said around 15,000. The guy I was with estimated at 10,000 only.

Of course you didn't want a sensible answer to your rather pointless question did you.....but just being there is obviously going to make my answer far more accurate than yours.

You keep cutting and pasting, if it helps you feel like you are making a contribution....

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 28 March 2006 :-

Rally move to Siam Paragon worries police, sellers
================================================================

The shifting of an anti-Thaksin rally to the street outside the Siam Paragon shopping mall tomorrow evening has raised fears of major traffic snarls in downtown Bangkok.

The three-day rally, from tomorrow to Friday, led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), will force the closure of part of Rama I road which is lined with up-market shopping malls, movie theatres and restaurants. This is certain to cause traffic jams.

"We are worried the traffic congestion could even spread as far as Thon Buri" on the western side of the Chao Phraya river, said traffic police commander Maj-Gen Panu Kerdlappol.

"There will be a traffic jam along Sukhumvit road stretching to Samrong Nua in Samut Prakan province," he added.

Police spokesman Pol Lt-Gen Achirawit Supanphesat said the gathering near Siam Paragon would cause concerns about public safety.

The area is full of tall buildings with pedestrian bridges and a BTS skytrain station above the rally venue. Police feared "some people" might use this setting for evil action that could harm others, said Metropolitan Police Bureau Region 6 Commander Pol Maj-Gen Wanit Suraphonchai.

Sa Pathum Palace is behind Siam Paragon and the mall has been visited by members of the royal family, said Justice Minister Chidchai Wannasathit.

PAD said it was relocating the protest to business areas, such as Silom and Rama I roads, to make it easier for middle-class people to show support.

Sondhi Limthongkul and other leading PAD members, including Piphop Dhongchai, Somkiat Pongpaiboon and Somsak Kosaisuk, were silent when asked about their plans to change the venue from Ratchadamnoen Nok avenue to in front of Siam Paragon.

Asked if they knew the new venue was near the palace, Mr Sondhi said PAD had organised the rally at the Royal Plaza and knew what was appropriate.

But the new rally venue drew mixed response from teenagers and vendors at Siam Square, a favourite teen hangout.

"If the traffic is clogged up we can come here by the skytrain and then get double benefits, shopping and joining in the PAD movement," said Wilailuck Lertphaopanya, 15.

However, other youngsters who attend extra-tuition classes at Siam Square disagreed with the move.

Kulkitti Jadphon, 15, said she feared the noise might disturb her studies.

Clothing and shoe sellers were also upset, predicting the rally would cut the number of customers who drive to Siam Square to shop. They said the Sunday rally, which lasted for a half day, sharply reduced sales revenue.

"In fact we dislike Mr Thaksin, but if the rally hurts us, then PAD will lose new members," said vendor Thasawan Kotesri.

Phaibul Kanokvatanawan, executive vice-president of the Mall Group which operates Siam Paragon and the Emporium said the shopping centres will open as usual and he expected tomorrow's rally to have only a slight effect on sales.

All activities and promotions at the stores will continue as scheduled, including the Midnight Sale promotion.
