One of the reasons (not the key reason obviously) for my trip to Thailand is to check out another culture's art pratices. I'm a visual arts student in a university in California, and I will use some of the digital photos that I take on this trip as a portfolio for my upper division classes (and no, not the porn pictures!).
Art studios or galleries in BKK?
I've already planned on grabbing a little brown angel and asking her to take me around the city to look at art... nothing like local know how!

One way to get to discover the art scene would be to visit Silapakorn university (north of grand palace), which is the main art university. There you can easily meet students who might be willing to guide you.
Another area, not far from this one, would be the bars of Phra Athit road, which cater to art/advertising people and other thai yuppies. This is quite lively and contact should be easy. all this people will know way more about the art scene than a regualr BG.

don't know if this is what you are looking for. but at royal garden in pattaya, or MBK in bangkok, there are these artists who can draw anything, in any form of media, for cheap. just bring a picture, and they can finish a replica or charcoal drawing in about three days for under $100US. it might be interesting to you if you want to see their skills.
i buy alot of art from the Bane galleries in California, but these are guys are sometimes even better. they can replicate Sorayamas, Huls, and Posadas.
on my upcoming visit, i plan to have thm draw a few pics for me. since it is way cheaper than a serigraph/lithograph poster. i'll get an original - so to speak.
