Anyone know where to buy Brietling and Baume-Mercier watches, somewhere that offers the best prices and not copies. Friend wants me to price them for him.

racy, the two obvious places are Emporium (1st flr) and World Trade Center (3rd-4th flrs). There is a couple of stalls in MBK that sell real stuff, but Breitling is not as popular a brand for them as Rolex and Omega. I have found that prices are comparable to duty-free prices in Europe, or average discounts in the US. You sometimes can negotiate them down a bit, especially in MBK, less so in WTC and Emporium. There is, however, one store in Emporium (the name escapes me at the moment, but it's on a 1st flr corner with a lot of teak in the decor) that sells both Breitling and B&M and is fairly aggressive with prices once they realize you're serious. Cheers, -PB

I am pretty sure that the place Polar Bear is referring to is Pendulum who have 2 or 3 stores in Thailand as well as a website http://www.pendulum.co.th. They used to sell B&M but I think they have stopped - they certainly sell Breitling. (B&M is available at ground floor Emporium and also in the watch shop almost opposite Pendulum). In both cases (inc.Emporium) when he mentions 1st flr he actually means ground flr (always confusing in Thailand). I buy quite a lot of watches and can tell you that if negotiate you can get very good deals here because the overheads are so low. When I buy a watch here (usually from Pendulum) I compare to the prices achievable over the internet and often get a better deal. However a lot depends on the shop. For instance B&M is a fairly common brand so prices are lowish but so is the discount. Franck Muller is one brand that Pendulum have exclusive rights to. Headline price is high but so are discounts - I got a discount of over 47% on mine (bringing the price down below internet prices). Prices here are very competitive (especially if you can get back the VAT) as a tourist. What you should do is choose your models, check against the internet and negotiate at the shop.

I have 2 Breitlings which I bought in Dubai (at what I thought were very good prices) and checked out Pendulum (I think) in Emporium out of curiosity. I was very surprised at how good the sticker prices were without any bargaining. I had previously found the UAE to have the best prices (about 40% below UK retail) but will definitely be buyng my next timepiece in BKK.

Thanks for the info, I checked out the shop Pendulum in Emporium today, their Brietling Colt with white face and metal band was 42,500b, that was at the time without waving cash at their noses their best price. As this is for a friend and I know FA about watches, do not even own one, how does this sound for price ??

Not sure how much the Chrono Colt tends to go for here or elsewhere. I know that the cost of an Emergency at Pendulum was approximately $300 less than Dubai, off the ticket (and at todays rates the DXB price was around $1800 less than at home in the UK). I did an online search and there are different variants of that watch (the chrono colt), this often happens with Breitling, where the metal used in the watch body, the type of strap etc. can seriously affect the final price. List prices (US) appear to be (very roughly) in the $1250-$1550 range with discount vendors charging $850 - $1150. Superficially it looks like you could get a better discount online in the US, however whether this comes from a reputable dealer etc. is questionable. The Chrono Colt is positioned towards the lower end of the range and thus margins are probably not fantastic, it would be interesting to know what you manage to beat them down to though. For automatic watches I would always go to a proper dealer rather than buying online, so that you get a manufacturer warranty and goodwill when things go wrong (for instance my titanium bracelet fell apart one day when playing golf, they replaced it after a bit of arguing free of charge rather than making me pay almost £300 for a new one). On the face of it (pardon the pun) it looks like a reasonable buy. Assuming you get c 2.5k back from the VAT refund, if you were to get them to drop another 5k or more it could be a great deal.

Apparently two types of copy in LOS - the ones made locally are cheap, and rubbish, but copies from taiwan are pretty good - suggest just by comparison, you go to Klong Tom market - underground near Merry King dept. store, Wang Burapha - this is the wholesale place for watches, Ive seen / Brought good copies there for 150 bt that sell in MBK for 1000bt - likewise, some of the smaller, upmarket stalls there, do have VERY good copies, and doubt you pal would know the difference - expect to pay around 2500 bt for a top class copy brietling -

Come on TPE ! The price of a watch is in its movement, not the outside. It is like girls, you know the "inner beauty" thing. Seriously, any watch amateur will spot a 2,500bht fake Breitling if he has seen the original before.
