Here is a good one. I am very ignorant of gold and jewelry. I am cuming in December to get engaged to my TGF. Would it be a better deal to get the ring from here in LA or would I be better off getting it in Bkk. I know nothing and do not want to spend too much. Thanx

gold and jewels in thailand are ridiculously cheap. so you'll be better off buying in LOS.
The design and colour allthough might be not exactely your taste as the gold in thailand is more soft and more golden colour compared to the blended gold sold in the west.

Gold in Bkk is more pure. I think 23 karat. In US is only 14 karat sometimes 18 karat. IMHO BKK gold is very yellow and I think very beautiful. Up to you !!!

Teacher is correct. One potential problem is if you buy a ring with the softer 23 carat and the ring breaks later on when you are in the US. I got one 23 carat ring and it was impossible to find any jeweler that could repair it (they need to 'solder' it with same type of gold). So now I have a yellow ring with a whiter shade of lower-grade gold where it broke.
If you live in a city with a large asian population you might not have this problem, though.

While gold and jewels are very cheap in LOS, there are also many rip-offs, so let the buyer beware.
Although I am not a jeweler, everyone else in my family is, so I have learned quite a bit about the trade. One place that I would recommend is Thai Gems.com, which is on Silom.

What jimaz says is absolutely correct, although it is possible to get 23 carat gold in the U.S.

As a manufacturing jeweller here in Bangkok, I would really advise you to purchase an 18k ring instead of a 23k one, which not only will definitely break (it is WAY too soft to withstand daily wear) but will also be easier to sell in the West if that need were to later apply.
My further advice would be to remember that with jewellery as with everything else, you get what you pay for - if you are presented with a jewel which seems SO absurdly cheap, beware as it could well be mounted with imitation gemstones. Go to a reputable shop, not a stall in MBK, and DEFINITELY pay by credit card, which will give you some recourse in the event that the gems are synthetic. Unless you are buying simply gold (in the form of a bracelet of necklace) steer clear of the gold shops as their designs are absurdly outdated and would be again be difficult to sell in the West...having said all of the above, prices ARE very reasonable in Bangkok indeed, and the quality of manufacture and design, for so long somewhat poor, is finally improving. Dont hesitate to ask if you need more specific advice.
ps I would absolutely NOT suggest ThaiGems, they probably have the worst reputation in the whole of Bangkok...
