Okay, so I went on a mission to acquire 'Surijothai' and 'Ong-Bak' while there, specifically versions with English subtitles. Located both in a store in Pantip Plaza. Legit store, legit disks. Made sure they were the ones with English subtitles. Noted that because of that, they were nearly double the Thai DVD price (849 for Surijothai, 359 for Ong-Bak). Shopped around, grabbed the disks from the rack, paid, and found out onnce back in the US that these were Thai disks without subtitles. Arrrrrrrrgghhhhhhhhhhh! Okay, can ANYONE over there please point me to a place where I can buy these online, or maybe pick them up for me - I'll send you $$$ for purchase, and shipping, of course. I would just really like to be able to watch both of these, and know wat's going on Harry

hzink, Unluck man....I actually was looking for Thai VCD's & DVD's with English subtitles while I was in LOS for the Oct RT...it was a bitch finding these. Finally my tailor wrote the name of this place in Thai of course and I passed it to the taxi driver....I got brought to this place...its near Chinatown I believe....its an open air market and there are loads of stalls selling VCD's and DVD's(original of course) with English subtitles. Apparently its a place frequented by mainly Thais and I didn't see any tourists....managed to get a few VCD's for about 100 baht each...not too bad any they were not copies... Now...stupid me has forgotten the name...but I'm sure some of the bros staying in LOS will be able to direct you to the place I described or at least buy them for you there. I just saw Ong Bak in the movies here in Singapore and it was great....

Suriyothai and Ong Bak are both published and distributed by Mang Pong (franchise stores). Ong Bak - As far as I know there are no VCDs/DVDs with English subtitles on the market Suriyothai - There are various versions of this movie in circulation Suriyothai (original) - The first release had English subtitles (at least the DVD for sure). Suriyothai (complete five hour version) - No English subtitles The Legend of Suriyothai (shortened version edited by Francis Coppola) - Thai release - Not sure if English subtitles American release - next month nationwide 25 nov. 2003 Plus there are seperate 'making of' versions of both movies around. Difficult to distinguish from the 'full' movie if you can not read Thai. Even a Thai friend bought 'the making' instead of the real movie. The best place to buy original DVDs in Pantip is Zest (second floor, left hand side, near elevator) distributor of original thai game releases. Outside Pantip: CD Warehouse, formerly Tower Records(Emporium, Mall Bangkapi) Mang Pong - Has a limited assortment published by themselves - good prices (159-259 and up). Extras usually cut out.

Ong Bak is an awesome movie, the main thai star in it didnt actually want to do the movie but his father pursuaded him, now he has been signed up by one of the biggies in Hollywood. Without a doubt the guy is the next Jet Li/Jackie Chan, and he actually performed ALL of the stunts in Ong Bak, no wires, no trickshots, truly amazing. I Don't know of the place you mention in China town nor any others, i've been looking around too, theres another good one called 'Fake' but i cant find anything. Good thing about Ong Bak is even with the basic of thai you can figure out the story and lines relatively easy. If anyone finds the name of the place in Chinatown or any others let us know, I'd be more than happy to send you a copy of the ones you want Hzink.

But see, here's the rub - I actually bought mine at the 2nd floor retailer at Pantip Plaza (the Center Point was right across from it), and I made sure to read the back of the cases which clearly stated, in both cases 'Subtitle English'. Dork that I am, I put them back on the shelf, shopped around some more, and then went back, and grabbed them from the same location I put them on previously. So, in other words, that retailer DOES have them in English, I just picked the wrong boxes. So, yes, they have both with English subtitles. How do we go about taking care of this (i.e. how do I send you the $$$ to buy these?) Harry

Of course, first thing I did. Then I tried ripping the disk to see all available sub-title tracks, and noticed that I was SOL. Harry

I have never seen Ong Bak with English subtitles and I have been looking since it came out. They all seem to be the same. Dr Loves info seems to be spot on according to my purchases, and I also know a Thai who bourght the 'Making of Ong Bak', then got into an arguement about it with me when i said it wasn't out yet!

had the same problem with my suriyothai copy. first i thought it doesn't have english subtitles as they don't show up in the menu. After complaining the shop assistant in panthip showed me how to get them. They are actually there but the key is that you will have to get somebody who can read thai as they only show up in the thaimenu as an option. i know this is damn stupid but TIT!

Actually, it is not so stupid. The instructions have to be in some language. Whatever that is. If you get a DVD with English instruction but if you can not read English you can not activate the subtitles in ... whatever other languagre there is. Once I had a motorola mobile phone and playing with it i changed the language to Chinese. No way I could then understand the menu afterwards. I was f_cked until I was about to board a flight to HKG at LAX and asked the Cathay agent at the counter to help me get it back to English. Ok, I deserved it .... but .....
