Hey guys, does anyone know if you can buy western cigarettes, such as Peter Stuyvesant, Benson and Hedges etc... (or any other western brands, for that matter) in Thailand?

When I was in Thailand in Jan. I was smoking thai cigarettes and after a few days they started to taste like sh_t for a day or two. It may have been a climate/pollution/cheap tobacco combination. I didn't really care too much as it was just an extension of the whole Thai experience to me but I would prefer something a bit more palatable when I get back there soon, if what I am after is available.

Depends what you mean by 'Western'. The Marlboro on sale in LOS (55 baht) are made in the Philippines. Some people don't like them, but I find them on a par with the Marlboro I used to smoke in England at 6 times the price, or with US-manufactured duty-frees. That said, I mainly smoke More (38 baht) these days. This a Japanese brand, also made in the Philippines by JT International. Both are on sale everywhere.

You can often get Malaysian Marlboros in LoS, too. My corner store seems to alternate between those and the PI-mades, but they are indistinguishable. 505 baht a carton. Yes, Class "B" cigarettes do exist.

I have heard that they sell tobacco in Asia and here in the Gulf that would not be allowed for sale in most western countries. At least you can afford to smoke in Thailand and in the Gulf. In Australia smokes are 8 or 9 dollars a packet or at current exchange rates 240-270 baht a packet. You could feed a pot habit for less than a tobacco habit in Oz.

Well, my own impression as a consumer is that cigarettes made in SE Asia under licence from the big multinationals & sold at reputable outlets are perfectly fine. But you do have to be a bit careful - for example, bootleg Marlboro from Cambodia (cleverly copied cartons) are so foul as to be practically unsmokable. God only knows what they're made of - recycled cigarette butts, I shouldn't wonder.

Arcadius I vaguely remember being told that those cigs sold in SE Asia would not meet health standards in the west. Maybe someone else can either confirm of deny this. Anyhow if you are a regular smoker I suppose you are not that concerned with minor health issues like this.
