I was wondering if I should buy a small digital camera in USA before I left or when I get there. Any suggestions on good camera stores in bkk? Thanks, Petero

I would rate the best places to by camera to be either HK or Japan , following a close second USA or Singapore.
Thailand I would not rate at all.
My advise buy before you go!

Since you'll probably be stopping in Japan, HK, Taipei or Singapore on the flight over you could consider getting one there at the airport. But unless you really know what you're doing and what they have available it's probably safer and more convenient to get it at home.

I have been checking out prices of electronics in Asia. HK does not have good prices anymore. Japan is priced too high. In fact when Japanese tourists come to the USA they buy Japanese products here. I am not too sure about Singapore. Thailand is also priced high.
That would leave the USA. Buy it in the US. You can go to a store or look on the internet. There are many dealers in New York and the prices are good. Some of the products may be grey market.
Do some product research, price comparisions and buy it in the US.

I think you're probably right. The time when good electronics were cheaper in Asia has passed. It's still worthwhile to buy cool things that aren't released over here, though. Like a Hello Kitty vibrator, for example

what DO they cost in BKK? Say for a 128mb or 64mb.
Skip I don't know where you're from, but here (Holland) the price of memeory goes up and down like a yoyo and varies massively at any given time depending whether it's bought in a high street chain or in a small back street puter shop. I bought 128mb memory for my camera about 18 months ago. Searched on the net and compared prices of small shops with big high street shops and ended up getting it for half the price I would have paid (and nearly did pay) on the high street. I paid 160 guilders for 128mb (which is about $70). But now the prices are much higher... 128mb right now is more in the region of $120.

re the flashcard question.
when i went to Phuket i took 2x4 and a 16MB flash card.
thinking i would look for something bigger when i was there.
did'nt bother,more expensive then in the UK.
as were other camera/video equipment.
had my digital camera broken while i was there and on my last night bought a disposable camera for those last pictures.
cost me more then £12(720 baht) for a basic one,you can get them for £7(420 baht) in the UK.
one more before your name change X

I have lived in Asia for 10 years and I have yet to find a bargain on electronic goods, except at the duty free shops at the airports. Most the stuff is made over here, but for some reason (taxes?) it is more expensive. I wanted to buy a professional model Sony digital camera but they didn't have it in the shops where I live so I had a friend of mine in Japan buy me one on Tokyo's electronic street. It was still more expensive than the same camera in the USA. Go figure.
The prices in USA are cheaper than Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo or Hong Kong. Haven't been to Europe in 10 years so I do not know about European prices but my guess is it is cheaper. So buy before you come or try the duty free shops at the airports.
