Ok.. I'm going to be in Thailand for the next couple of days (flying in today and out on Friday) and the focus of this trip is to pick up some paintings.
Any tips from the long term residents on where I should begin looking? Not looking for expensive designer stuff... something asian, something thai, nothing modern/artsy-fartsy.

I found a place that had interesting paintings along Sukhumvit, somewhere between Sois 7 & 11, IIRC. It looks a bit like a frame shop from the outside and they do custom frame work there as well as sell original works. Some Thai style, others looking to appeal to Western tastes. Definitely check it out.
There also was an interesting place on the second floor of Le Meridien, more ceramics and that sort of thing, but interesting.

seubeu, thanks for the recommendations. The gal at the check in desk here in the hotel recommended the jewellery center (silom). Got some down time tommorrow afternoon. Will definately check out the sois you recommended.

Went to the Art place you mentioned in Sukumvit its a fairly big galery. Has a good selection but the stuff is very pricy. I saw and excellent piece and they wanted 180, 000 bhats - f*ck off.
I visited an art galaey in Pattaya that had something similar for fraction of the price.
bangkok has been more and more pricy over the years for the same stuff.

I saw many art galaries along Sukumvit, another chineese art galary. But most of my experience has been that its bloody over priced. Also theu seem to jack up prices based on where you are from. When you say US, finished their prices tend to be on the US$ side.
I ended up buying a decent oil painting at a galery in pattaya on the last trip. The lary quoted 4000 Bhats forna nice large oil painting aroubf 40 inches by 32 inches.
I finally bargained it down to 3000 as I said I would pay cash. Nothing fancy just a beautiful painitng of trees in sping that had a fantastic 3D effect.
The river city pier has a lot of stuff but bloody expensive as they cater to the Oriental, Shangrila and Peninsular crow who frequent the shops there.
One once bought a fantastic painting of the Temple of dawn there, a coffee painting on hand paper bloched in Coffee and individually numbered for only 1000 bhats but that was 5 years ago.
The prices are all astronomical now.
