I am probably the last person in BKK not to own a mobile phone. However, after much agonizing I have decided to take the plunge.

What I want is a preowned older model for use with prepaid cards. I took a look at the selection in MBK and think I will settle for a Sony Ericsson T610. Looks nice and has a (poor) camera. Asking price was around 3900 THB.

But what's the deal with these shops. Do you risk buying a stolen phone or one that breaks after one week? And how much can you expect to bargain the price down?

Any advice and directions to trustworthy shops would be highly appreciated.

Regards, Pete.

I bought a phone from Tony Phone at MBK. I don't think it was stolen, I think it was just a phone that a school girl traded in when she upgraded to a fancier one. No problems at all with the phone, works fine when I am in Thailand. The phone cost 1200 baht and I didn't bother to bargin.

I bought a mobile phone supposedly new Nokia at MBK. It broke within a week. The insides of the phone was used. Gave me a loaner phone, I just kept it.

This doesn't answer your question but I have the sony T610. If you are going to do any sms messening I wouldn't go with it. Found it hard to use for that function compard to my Nokia's.

Yes camera is poor

Do you care if it was stolen? The police never going to check and its already fixed up. Most of the phones are from singapore and importad "customs are paid" and then sold cheaper then the normal once. The biggest player for cell phone in Thailand SUPPRICE TA DA Thaksins Sister......she controlls most of the market including selling pre paid cards all brands to whole sellers...

I was with a girl yesterday who needed to buy a phone, she wanted to save money and buy a second hand one. I asked her if she was going to MBK and she told me that many of used phones in MBK are bad. Insides substituted, software messed, up, etc. And forget about getting a refund or return from a phone shop in MBK if there is a problem.

She said that a Telewiz shop is a reliable place. J-Mart would be also, but I am not sure if they sell 2nd hand.

I have a friend (girl) who owns a shop in mbk. I know her well and her boyfriend so I sent over already a lot of people to her.

She does new and second hand. I bought my new phones there as well as a lot of people who come to thailand and ask me where to get a phone.

Very reliable, good prices and great service. I can recomend her. Go the the mobile phone floor and go the the food court in the middle of the floor.

In the gangway between the shops you have some smaller shops if you stand with your back to the foodcourt. It is at the end.

Then ask for Kantaya.

If there is one thing I can afford to buy is a Thai Virgin phone at least the one virgin that can be obtained in this country.

MBK that place just gives the appearance of everything being underworld and corrupt. I would not even trust anything purported to be new.

Stick to the original stores such as SONY shops, Nokia shops, and big retailers such as Jay Mart.

Everyone tries to disprove the old adage "You get what you pay for", but then don't complain when you are the one that ends up holding the bag.

A refund at MBK

MBK isn't all that bad. I bought a 2nd hand one quite a while ago for about 2,000B, it worked for over a year. These days, you can get a brand new Nokia for 3,500+ or less, so getting a 2nd handphone is not really necessary, unless you are really broke.
