I could not find anything on this after UTFSE. Are new vehicles really that expensive in Thailand, and why? I was looking at the websites for Mercedes, BMW, and Honda Thailand. The price stated on the website for a Mercedes CLS500 is something like $275,000 USD. The same car in the states would be about 60-80K. Even 3 series BMWs are from 60-120K USD in Thailand. So are these really the prices that people are walking out of the showrooms with these cars, or are they much less then advertised. Are Used cars drastically cheaper? What are some good Used Dealers in BKK that some of you might have used?

It is a combination of 2 factors: 1) for a car not built in ASEAn with at least 40% ASEAN content, there is 80% import duty. BMW counts as locally assembled, not sure about merecedes. 2) Regardless of where car is built, cars are considered a luxury good and get a excise tax. The excise tax depends on engine size primarily (for cars). And it multiplies on top of the import duty 3) pickup trucks have very low excise tax, that is why they are so much cheaper. SUV built off of pickup platform gets next lowest excise tax (e.g., toyota Fortuner). Next up us SUV like an Escape or CRV. Then cars are highest, with a scale going up with engine size.

its based mainly on engine size (CC of the engine) and how many liters... this will also come into place when you perform taxes and tags for the car... old Porsche 911s from the 70s and 80s are still as expensive as ones now... very low depreciation... and dont even consider trying to import one of the old ones... massive duties... Mercedes is built here; two types of models... if built here have fewer of the options that imports have... take the old S280 or S500 (if you can find the genuine one; not just rebadged) the imports have a sunroof and other fine options (even though I have yet to see a Thai use the sunroof) also the cost btwn them is larger...

Thanks guys, That explains a lot. This all started when I was shocked at what the price of a Porsche costs in Thailand off of thier website. I have a new found respect for people driving nice cars in Thailand now. I will stick with taxis for the moment.

cal I think accord is around 1.5 million baht. Honda and toyota carry much less premium than luxury american and european model. When I price out a car in bkk, I found mercedes, ferrari, lamborighini, porsche and corvette are all about 250 percent the price (as compare to states), and japanese brand and cheaper american brand car is about 110-120 percent the price in the states. I guess the discrepancy is due to reason, lucky6666 have pointed out.

Not sure about that one... do people spending most of their income on a flashy car and tightening the belt for much of the rest deserve much respect ?? Sure seems to happen to a lot of people in BKK. Otherwise I'm all for powerful german cars. It's the state run terror campaign on fun driving back home that convinced me to stick to trains and cabs... There's an Audi S8 parked across Mayfair in Lang Suan... just rocks!!

I believe the added tax on motor size is actually based on "horse-power", I remember reading of BMW de-tuning one of its models to fall into the under 150HP tax catagory for Thailand. Anyway Thailand will soon be flooded with Aussie cars The new free trade deal will see us with a big advantage on the larger model cars. If you ask me,, stick to HJonda or Toyota.
