Anyone know of a good Hardware Store in the downtown BKK area. Something along the lines of a Home Depot?

Home Pro is the closest thing to Home Depot I've seen here. There are a number of stores

http://www.homepro.co.th/en/index.asp will get you to their site. Under the Company Profile tab, select Branch location to see where they are.

There are smaller versions (Ploenchit BTS station) and larger ones Home Pro Plus I think are the huge warehouse type locations. Depending on your needs you might find the smaller ones suitable.

HomePro is probably the best choice for you. Lotus also has some tools and garden tool type stuff. There are also many little Thai shops in the sois if you walk and look, selling electic tools as well as the other toys. Might be a little cheaper.

Future Park
A lot of those mom and pop type hardware stores can be much cheaper for smaller items e.g. if you want to drill some holes in a wall and need some wall plugs then at Home-Pro you have to buy a pack of 30 that you may never use. The small shops will sell you exactly how many you need, no fancy packaging and much cheaper.

Power tools sold in the same small shops are usually very poorly made Chinese units, cheap, but l prefer to pay extra at Home Pro or Tesco for a brand name (likely still made in China) something less likely to fall apart. If you want to shop at a store the size of an American Home Depot then the Home Pro at Future Park is the largest l've seen. There's not much it doesn't sell. Must be other large ones but l haven't seen them.

Baquawn,

I've bought some larger things from Home Pro, including a washing machine (LG front loader -- come to think of it, I like bras like that too). The big surprise I got from Home Pro, was they showed up with the washing machine at my apt more or less on time, then, for FREE, replumbed the faucet on the balcony to add a tee upstream from which they attached two meters of plastic waterline with a shutoff valve. The installation was a little tedious, as they had to snake it around to the other side of the balcony and then come up behind the machine. This was done in coordination with the apartment maintenance staff who oversaw the water shutoff/on issues.

They even tested it for leaks and asked me to signoff on it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, after all, T.I.T. So while they were working (took 'em about an hour to do all this), I ran down, grabbed some cokes for everyone, which they drank while sweating their arses off on the back balcony. When they left, I gave 'em each a cold Heineken, and a tip. Two days later, I got a call from Home Pro asking if everything was working properly nearly passed out from surprise, lol!

So they seem good for stuff like this, and I've found their follow-up and recourse is better than Tesco. Within the constraints of Thai behavior, they seem to be trying to emulate a Western service model.
