This has been asked before, but no useful answers given. Anybody know where to buy fishing gear? I'm looking for stuff like Shimano reels, braided fishing line, that kind of thing.

Heard rumors you can get some stuff from the Supermarkets, but not sure if this is try, or what the quality is.

Can anybody help?.

Well, they do have a few poles and reels and things in Tesco Lotus (roll back), true, but perhaps there is somewhere more quality.

In Bangkok try the area around the National Stadium, which (surprise) is at the National Stadium Station, at one end of the BTS line. A cluster of sports equipment stores there, nothing great but better than the general supermarkets.

However I STRONGLY recommend going out little ways to Bangna, a few minutes taxi ride past the other (South) end of the Sukhumvit BTS. There is a SUPER sports store near there, down thre highwy from the Seacon Mall - about a mile to the right if you're facing Seacon. GREAT selection of ALL sports equipment, including fishing.

Believe it or not, Angel Massage near Emporium advertises fresh water fishing trips in addition to its 'other' services.

A tip: Do NOT book a seat on a "Deep Sea" party boat in Pattaya unless you get a personal recommendation. I booked one - hoping for just one of the huge game fish pictured all over their street kiosk. But none of the couple of dozen passengers caught anything bigger than their hand.

Their excuse of course - "well they're just not biting". Riiiiiiiight!!! That despite the fact that they were totally prepared for fishing for nothing larger than minnows - the hooks and bait bits supplied were so tiny that we couldn't have possibly caught anything bigger, plus they stayed parked on the same barren spot the whole damn morning. TGF had fun though - for the first hour.

Caveat Emptor!

There is a store on Sukhumvit between Ekkamai and On Nut (before Tesco Lotus) on the left hand side heading towards Lotus. Lot's of rods in the storefront. I don't know if they have any other sporting stuff.

Take a taxi from Ekkamai BTS - just tell the driver Lotus On Nut. Watch closely on the left and tell him to stop just as you see it. It is real easy to miss.

Have never bought anything there myself so can't vouch for the place. Only seen it driving by.

I have never found a place in Thailand that sells top of the line fishing gear. I am sure that one exists but I have not found it. I bring all my reels, rods, and tackle from home when I visit. This trip I plan to bring 6 Tiagras, 4 Stellas, a number of Stradics, Van Staals, and all my trolling and jigging rods as well as my blue water tackle.
Malaysia has some awesome shops with a selection almost as large as what we have here in Florida.

Thailand has a great fishery for black marlin that is almost untapped. There is an abundance of 150lb-250lb juvenile fish in the gulf and the Andaman has the potential to produce granders. As far as I know there are only one or two boats capable of catering to this type of fishing so you do not hear much about it. The commercial longliners are the ones bringing in the abundance of large marlin and tuna.
The Stellas I use for butterfly jigging and I catch everything from snapper and grouper to wahoo and jacks. The new Shimano butterfly jigs are the best lure I have ever fished. We caught YFT this weekend from 50lb to 120lbs on them here in Florida.
