Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 3 August 2007 :- Habitat expands Bangkok store ======================== The British furniture manufacturer and retailer Habitat has allocated more than 30 million baht to expand its store in Bangkok and transform it into one of the country's largest one-stop design centres for lifestyle home-furnishing products. Habitat's only outlet in Thailand, situated on the fourth floor of Siam Discovery Center, will be expanded by adding another 700 square metres on the fifth floor. After the expansion, Habitat expects sales to grow by 30% this year, with 15,000 to 20,000 customers visiting the shop, each spending 5,000 to 6,000 baht on average, up from about 2,500 baht last year, said chief executive Chanintr Sirisant. He noted that the current economic downturn had no effect on sales, which continued to grow in line with rising demand from new home or condominium owners. Up to 90% of the products are imported, which makes them 15% more expensive than in England due to transport costs and import taxes. According to Mr Chanintr, the expansion has allowed Habitat to add more departments and services to better serve its wide range of consumers, from 20 to over 50 years old. New services and departments include a design centre, where design professionals help customers select furniture and accessories that match their lifestyle. Also, a children's section has been added to offer a collection of children's furniture, bedding and toys. The space expansion would also allow the store to offer a new art centre where more than 5,000 images are featured along with an ''art-on-demand'' service, where customers can order reproductions of famous works of art. The Thai store will start celebrating its 10th anniversary under the theme ''Bigger Than Life'' today. The celebration will continue for the rest of the year with a wide range of free workshops, new seasonal collections and discounts on selected products and services.
