I am getting conflicting reports (surprise surprise) on the limits and possibilities of shipping bhuddas and other religious symbols out of the country.

I am told that exporting such things they must

1) be 100 CM tall
2) < 100 years old
3) Iit must be full body and intact (no head or hand, etc)
4) All items must have paperwork from the Fine Arts Department to clear customs.

Clearly tourist buy stuff all the time and take them out via the airport. According to a friend at Surva, the real ltourist stuff gets out ok while nice stuff is often confiscated.

Anyone have real experience on this and know the ropes?

Thanks.

DHL won't let you send Buddha's anymore, thought Fed EX will let them through.

Things changed last year, depends what you want to export?

If its only for your self take in your carry on

There is a shop top floor MBK near where you exchange the coupons for baht after you've been to the food court

Top right hand side I bought some nice Bronze Buddha's from her and got them at a good price so I could resell in my retail shop and on e-bay she supplies papers for customs and she has a good range all Golden Bronze.

Before you take Buddha out of Thailand…

You need a permit before taking Buddha images out of Thailand?

While most of the images are cheap imitations, apparently some archaeological material may slip through, like how a Khmer sandstone head was seized from a departing tourist last year.

Seized Buddha images were donated to Thalang museum

In a small ceremony at Phuket International Airport, Airport Customs officials yesterday handed over to the Thalang National Museum 93 Buddha images seized from departing tourists over the past year.

Phuket Airport Customs Director Ruthai Lertkietdamrong told the Gazette most of the images were seized from tourists who bought them from shops unaware that they needed permission from the Fine Arts Department to take them out of the country.

While many of the Buddha images were cheap replicas for which such permission could have been easily obtained, one sandstone image of the Buddha’s head was an artifact of historical significance, he said.

The image probably dated back to the Khmer Empire, could be up to 1,000 years old and probably changed hands many times before its seizure at the airport, K. Ruthai said.

Permission to export Buddha images can be obtained at the Thalang National Museum, which is run by the Fine Arts Department, he added.

If tourists are unsure whether Buddha images or items they are considering buying require a permit for export, they should ask the shop owners selling the items, he said.

For more information call the Thalang National Museum at 076-311426 during government office hours.

Thanks Jingo...

Sadly, most of the shop owners merely want to sell and they will almost always tell you "no problem to take home to your country".
And for many, they do make it but there does seem to be a crackdown of sorts on this.

Thanks

If you want to export any religious statue out of Thailand you need to go to Fine art department (it is near the Thewet market) with your statue and 2 pictures of each statue you want to export (4X6inches color picture, with WHITE background)
Then there is a paper to fill, some "expert" will come and "certify" the statue, attach some sort of lead seal to it, then you can go and come back a few days later to get your "certificate"

It cost 50 baht per statue and there is a limit of 5 piece per person per trip (to be exported strictly for devotion/educational/research purpose, dont you dare say you want to sell them later or say goodbye to your statues!)

Hope this help
