Hello together,

during my next trip I need to buy some cheap but good toys for children between 10 and 14 years.
Starting from soccer ball over pictures books to LEGO stuff...

It should be cheap cause I need around 20 different toys.

Is there any place in Bangkok where you can get children toys? What is your recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

Simple is Lotus Tesco. Big C etc

not as simple is go to Chinatown, the main street is Yarawat with all the gold shops, when you see the Lotus Tesco on the right, go to the other side of the street and walk in a block or 2, this is the wholesale toy area,

Have Fun !

Things like LEGO may not be so cheap as it is imported and subject to local tariffs. However soccer balls, dolls, and electronic toys may be cheap as many of these things are made/assembled in Thailand.

I have found that the best deals are for internationally recognized products where the manufacturer has a facility in Thailand. In the case the 'overruns' and 'seconds' are dumped on the local market and are much cheaper than at home...

The inexpensive toys in Thailand are junk, as in crap toys that do not last. They are very cheaply made.

Buy cheap toys, and bring them with you. The kids will like them better if they can't get them here.

In that age group electronic games are big hits. The other thing they love the most though is......CASH. That is their favorite gift to get period. Nothing else comes close to the absolute joy they get from cash. Remember, in that age group kids do not get cash as their own very often at all.

... agree that you and the kids will be disappointed in local grey and black market toys and anything in Chinatown ( the absolute crappiest of imported goods)... they really are crap.

... partially agree with you on the money thing.

... ALL children enjoy the anticipation and surprise of opening gifts... especially if they know you brought them 'all the way from wherever' just for them.

... the selections at Bic C, Tesco-Lotus, are poor... Toys-R-Us is here, and have excellent selection, but they are 50% more expensive than in the States... Legos even more than that.

... while I give presents always to the young ones, I often include a red envelope with money... for the young ones, a lot of small notes thrills them... that becomes a tool for them to learn that the value of money is what it can BRING, not what it IS... having them share costs for ice cream, me borrowing THB 20 from them for a taxi and then repaying them, paying for their own BTS ticket, encouraging them to donate to a collection or tip box, saving a portion in their piggy banks... in these small gestures, I enjoy seeing their joy and pride, along with a few basic lessons.

... I'd bring toys (any particularly expensive or difficult to find ones, at least... ask their parents about it), and give money that YOU actively help them spend in thoughtful ways.

Thanks for all the information and comments!

In order to make the purpose of the toys more clear....

I'll go to Pakistan from Bangkok to visit our school project. After all the discussions with the managment and functions with the whole school I have some time with the children. As always I'll bring them some stuff for school (funny rubber, pencil,...) and some sweets. This time I thought that it would be a good idea to bring also some basic toys (no video Games or other very modern things).

Maybe knowing the background you can help me with more information about cheap shopping (limited budget) of basic toys.

Yes, all the toys at the malls or at Toy-R-Us are alot more expensive than in US....

If you want cheap plastic toys that are likely from China, guess you can find them from street vendors...of course, you have to know the price to bargain for the right price...For me, most of the time they give me similar price at the store for the same item.

In that situation, which is completely different from bringing gifts for kids here, China Town is where you want to shop. Once you find them, the shops sell bulk packages of cheap plastic toys for cheap prices.

This should be what you are looking for, and you can't buy single items, you have to buy in bulk. Think in terms of a gross (144) of any item. They will mix, and match, but a bulk sale is the final outcome. These are cheap bt5-bt10 items by themselves that sell on the streets for bt30-bt50.

It is in one of the side alley streets off the main road leading up from the river taxi pier, but I can't remember which one. You'll find it in less than an hour though if you are moving quick, and maybe ask someone working where the toy sellers are.

Personally I would bring a bunch of the cheap plastic toy musical instruments they have, kazoos, slide whistles, little guitars, drums. Basically enough variety they could have a little band, plus regular play toys. Just a thought.

China Town is where you want to shop for that though. No reason buying off the street vendors. Go to where they buy from, as it seems you want lots of quantity. You will get good fair prices.

the area Koolbreeze is talking about is the same area as I mentioned above,

That whole area has 1000s of small shops but there are a few streets that only have toys,

Sorry I am not in BKK now or I would get you the street name.but its the same street as Lotus tesco just on the left where Lotus Tesco is on the right
