There are a couple of good booteries/shoemakers on Sukhumvit like Tony's that do good quality custom work, alligator, etc, but can be pricey (tourist factor?). Anyone know of less expensive local places? Thnks

At this time of the year you should be able to get custom made boots approx 3000 THB , basic leather.
Crocodile and singray are more expensive kind of leather and what comes to price , I have seen "Made In Thailand" - labeled croc boots costs 7-800 DOLLARS in Internet shop.
If they ask You to pay 5000 for crocboots , a little over USD 100 or approx 100 EUR , I do not consider that is bad.
I myself have custom boots , basic leather and they are darn good !

Is it legal to export crocodile leather goods out of Thailand? I thought crocs are an endangered species.
Have heard stories that people entering Holland had been busted for bringing in stuff like this.

It is generally legal I think if the crock is grown on a farm, not captured from the wild. To be on the safe side you can get a certificate for the customs I guess...

I paid about 8,000 for a pair of crock loafers at Tony's, I guess on the expensive side though the quality was excellent. At 5,000 I would definitely consider it cheap...

I bought a pair of croc boots but payed only 4000. They were ready made boots from shelf , not custom.
What comes to other shops , check Yellow pages for shops farther from tourist areas.
Try also BTS to go down Sukhumvit.
BTW , Are You looking for measure-made boots or do You mean "Custom" is ready-made boots with special skins ?

Note that the Tony's on Sukhumvit, approximately on other side of street from Robinson's, is not the original Tony's. Tony's closed the Sukhumvit store several years ago now. Original Tony's (Tony and Bill) are now on Surawongse Road (Patpong runs between Silom and Surawongse),
on the opposite side of the street of Patpong, between Patpong 1 and Rama IV. The shop on Sukhumvit just kept the name, using the reputation of the old Tony's to lure in other customers.

A year ago I ordered measure-made boots at YOTHA SHOES Soi 7 Suk (if you go to the beer garden you'll pass on the right). I still have those CAT boots with steel cap and they are good. Prce was abot 3.500 if I remember correct. If you wanna call mobile is 01-0096815.
