On my last trip to LOS I noticed some great buys on golf shirts, e.g. Nike, Callaway.  Are these shirts the same quality as those in U.S. retail stores?  I know some of them are made in Thailand, so are these from the factory before they got distributed or are these 2nd quality with defects?  I know the Louis Vuitton stuff are imitations but what about the clothes?  I get leary when they offer me a shirt for $5 when it'll cost me $50 in U.S.  Also, I don't want to wear it once and then have it shred in the washing machine.

As far as I know these are all knockoffs.  Even seconds would fetch more to import, and most of these brands would scrap stuff rather than ruin their own market (and reputation) by selling off quality stuff for a mere fraction of their normal price.

That said, I'd check out the fourth(maybe third?) floor of Mah Boon Krong (MBK).  The clothing vendors are mostly on the end away from the National Stadium / Tokyu entrance.  I bought a bunch of knock off World Cup stuff there during my visit.  Some shops have better quality than others; if you don't know how to tell then you might consider taking your part time girlfriend along and asking her (if she was taught any homemaking skills back on the farm she might know something about sewing).

I bought about 5 shirts there and had no problem with any of them.  I got a very good deal on some at the opposite end of the skytrain line from BMK...can't remember the name but a huge discount store.  Paid about $4 for shirts that would sell in the US for at least $25 on sale.  Besides for $5 you get your money out if it lasts 5 times

About the merchandises I have bought during the years
I have found that durability and quality have been good.

Lacostes and other shirts have lasted 12+ yrs now without dropping a button.

"Fake" Levi´s lasted 10+,CK´s 4+ now.
I  got value for my money, fake clothes or not.

- re Street Vendors,  - under Thai law you can not sell stuff on the street, however by paying the local police a fee, - or shopowner, depending on which side of the footpath, you are not "seen" - and to keep things legal once a week, [ wednesdays] you supposedly have clear footpaths. Anyway, bottom line is, if they want, Police can confiscate any goods sold on the footpath, for this reason, EVERYTHING sold by these vendors is fake.  Of course it dosent mean some of it not good quality, but most of the clothes etc, are brought from nearby Pratunam Market, then just resold in the tourist areas, if you have time, go to pratunam, of course buying off your local vendor saves taxi fares.
