Maybe l'm a bit slow, but talking to some friends l found out they weren't aware of this either.
If you use 1-2-CALL pre-paid for your mobile, you can get a text message reply if you want to know what your credit balance is. Useful if you cannot understand Thai.
Just press *121# and in a few seconds you will have your credit balance and expiry date onscreen.

No need for that.
1-2-call will report balance in English if you so choose. Just call up Cust Svc and tell them you want all menus, voice prompts in English. Wait 30 minutes.

I use a 1-2-call Sim when in TH, but find the manual and website (all in thai) to be less than useful as a non thai reader.
Could anyone give me just a simple run down of how to apply credit to my account, after I have bought the top up card?
Thus far I have had to rely on my GF & hotel staff to help and this makes me feel like a bit of an idot.

BF, dial 900120, type in the secret code, wait and you'll receive an sms ...
BTW *121# is quite handy, it doesn't erase the duration of your last call.....

Balance Check sould be listed in the phone menu..It's a free call..Also when you make a call over 20 Baht you get a 25% disc on your next domestic call before mid night that day.....
REMEMber. You can keep you account open by adding minutes....It looks like 1 year is the limit becasue I can seem to get it to go over that time limit....I.E. I have 11 months left on the current balance and when I added 800 Baht (good for +100days to you baht time value) it only went to one year from the day I added...No problem. Just look at the overseas rates. Not as good as phone cards but a shite better that hotel charges and you can call while getting a BBBJ, which I have done!

I have all the voice prompts turned on in english, but for slightly different things like adding credit the instructions arent so clear, I have never used a pay as you go mobile before in the Uk even so maybe this is why I seem to be struggling (or maybe I am just being a bit thick).
Anyway cheers for the help.
