This is a new thread, because I wanted to share my experience, which was based on quite a lot of research, and I want it to be helpful for others rather than tacked on to a discussion about who wears Rolex watches, being a target etc.

After doing a lot of research on this site, I bought a copy of a Rolex Daytona from a booth type of shop called Barupa Watch Shop in the MBK shopping center. It is on the 3rd floor, opposite Valentine Music. It took me a bit of time to find it, even after some advice from the info point on the 2nd floor.

The girl who served me was very helpful, and one thing I did, was to tell her that went to her because they had been recommended as the place to buy top quality, which she appeared to really like.  I got a 1-year warranty, and she gave me a card with her name and date on it if I wanted to take it back.

I paid 4200 baht for the watch, she wanted 5000 and it is a lot better quality than the ones I have seen for sale along Sukhumvit road, and from that guy who hangs out around Nana Plaza with the big lump on the side of his face.  I looked at a lot of watches when I was in BKK before I bought this one.

I looked at a real one just before, and on mine, the second hand movement is not the Rolex ‘sweep’, but it is not obvious ticks either. I asked the girl about the movement and she said if I wanted something better, it would need me to buy a real one. It is not as thick as a real one, and I think that the way that the strap attaches is slightly different when viewed on the underside.

She showed me that the glass was scratch proof, and invited me to do the same, which I did, using my own key just to make sure. She also put in an extra link for free because I like to wear my watch really loose.

She also had other watches from the many manufacturers, including a few women’s watches. I have my eye on a ladies TAG, which she said she would sell to me for 3000 baht..  I have a real Breitling watch, so I looked at one of hers, and it was a very good copy. Maybe a little thinner, but the movement, and the weight was spot on. The only difference I could spot was that there was not a serial number on the back..

Based on all of my research on what to look for, this was my checklist.

Ask for the best, number one, AA quality, and when they show them, ask again if these are the best they have.

The quality of the body, especially around the area where the strap attaches.

The weight. If a Rolex or a Breitling, they are heavy. I found all fakes are really light.

If it has one of those rotating bezel things used for diving, what does it feel like? Will it come off after 2 days?

Does the time/date adjust feel solid. If it does not, this is going to be a really cheap one.

If it is supposed to be waterproof, and it is a screw out type, is there an o-ring to act as a seal?

If it shows the date and time, check all of the digits, to see if they are all printed correctly, and they are all lined up.

Check that all of the printing on the face. Numbers, other writing, are all spelt correctly, and line up.

If the strap is metal, look at the quality on both sides, and for machining marks. Does the clasp close solidly.

Does the back have engraving? My Rolex had the same as a real one, and as mentioned, the Breitling they had was virtually identical to my real one.

Ask if the face is scratch proof, and ask them to show you before you try, and try with a different key from the one they used. Do remember there is a difference between scratch proof and gouge proof!

Ask about a warranty, tell the person you are buying it from that you are going to be in BKK for a long time and you will remember him, and see the reaction.

And the best advice I picked up, try and check out a real one before hand.

Additional info:

My imitation Rolex stopped, so I asked a jeweler to check it for me, assuming that it was a flat battery.  The jeweler told me that the internals are from a kinetic Seiko watch, and in he own words, it might not be a real one, but it is a good watch.  The reason why it stopped was because I did not wear it for 3 weeks, so there was no kinetic movement to keep it going.

Mr. jnr....hey I'm crazy for watches.  Now I know its not cool to support the 'fake makers' but you are right, some of the copies are spot on.

Personally I think you paid too much but thats up to you and I cannot see the quality of what you bought.

But if your watch runs on kinetic motion, wouldn't it start working again once you picked it up and shook it a couple of times?

You list is good but I don't really get that particular because, really its a fake copy of a brand name watch.

Most of the watches, as far as I know are made in Guang Dong province (Shenzhen/Guang Zhou), China.

There are lots in Shanghai, where I am right now.

The biggest problem about these watches is something you haven't mentioned and that is METAL CORROSION.

The metaland finishing that is used is sub-standard to the original models.  In other workd your great looking fake will become a shitty looking fake, depending on the air quality where you live and your own body acids.

Even a simple thing like chrome plate sucks in China.

But even so, I love it when the watch dealer opens his case and there are all the beauties, maybe 30, 40 copies of really top notch originals in various styles.

Why its almost as good as an MP fishbowl!

fastmover,  so far this hookey Rolex is not starting to rot, although I think it is all stell rather than any chrome plate ( I just took it of and went over it with a fine tooth!).

I was in Beijing just after BKK, and I was offered watches several times. I did look out of curiosity, but did not see anyything better than I bought. But I human nature means I was always going to be biased towards mine!

I could not get her down below 4200, I even tried walking away, although after seeing my TGF in action, I should have taken her along.

In regards to the kinetic motion, it did restart when picked up and shaken, but I did not know it was kinetic at that time, so thought the battery was on the way out.

can you give some pointers in Shanghai where to get them from, as I am expecting to be back in China later on this year.

Hi guy,  nah street vendors are not allowed in Shanghai.
They exist out of a suitcase. And they run like hell when the Trade police come.

The best place to go is the big, controlled market at the corner of Hui Hai Lu and Shan Xi Lu called Xiang Yang market.  But you may not see a watch(good fakes) in the open. Again (sorry guys) since APEC was here there has been a continuous crackdown on fake goods.

But for sure if you look like a tourist (white face especially) they will let you know they have them, in the back.

Best price? For you RTB, with your playboy attitude with the girls? Lets see...OK for you ...special one time, ....300RMB..thats about 1500 BAHT.  But the price can go up for special copies.

Tough to get the best price if your a tourist.

Best move?  In Thailand  take a look at the watch you want, and walk away.  THEN get your thai girl, alone, to go buy it for you assuming you trust her.  Better yet buy 2 different watches and the price for both will drop. Same in Shanghai however the girlfriends are much more expensive so you have to factor that in....especially for a swinger like you RTB.

Mr jnr.....it doesn't mater what metal your watch is made of, it still will be substandard compared to the original.  And I am talking about is corrosion over a number of years from 1 to 4 or 5, which by that time you might be bored with it.

Or worse some dummy crook thinks it an original and boosts if from you. Happened to me.

I yelled after the guy..."its a fake", but he didn't beleve me.  It was a real robbery though. I guess that counts.

playboy??
swinger??

are you talking about ME??

brothers who know me personally could not possibly confirm that.

I am a rather shy, lethargic if not authistic person.

although I am flattered.

btw. got the VIP card in the karaoke and massage place last night, 20% discount.

it says "Plantinum VIP", really.

I think they want me to buy the place. I own a couple of chairs already...

Mr. RTB...hey false modesty!
Watch out, that Platinum card will start
to corrode right away. Probably substandard. plastic!

Test out your investment next time you go there...

Take two chairs with you on the way out the door.

Tell them your relocating the club, piece by piece.

it's a "Plantinum Card", that wasn't a typing mistake on my side.

I might wanna try to move some chairs to the factory, the ones I own at least.

jnr,

thanks for your advise.  Went there and bought a good fake and cheap fake rolex.  about the price you mentioned.  I mentioned I was refer to by someone on the Internet and she started to give me a better price and was happy as well that people are referring customers to them.  Too bad they don't have much Tag selection as it's my personal favorite.  Seems like there is a crack down in recent years, more so on Tag than any other watches IMO.  Do you know somewhere that sells a good fake Tag Kirium series watches ?  Specifically, the Formula 1 watch ?  That's still my #1 wish list watch.  It seems like it's an expensive watch to replicate.
