Hello, My TGF and I joke around a lot and sometimes she says, "Khun ba" to which I reply, "You nga la" and we laugh... "you're crazy... no, you are." Recently, she taught me some new sayings which she says are bad but she laughs when I say them to her... what to they mean? First... instead of "you nga la"... I say, "Mung nga la" and she always laughs in astonishment... but what does "Mung nga la" mean? Second... what does "buck phob" mean? Lastly, what does "ee phob" mean? Thanks for your time. Peace. Jim.

Mung nga la Same as Khun, but used by teens/friends among themselves (or people who are angry). Playful way...but as she indicated only to be used if among yourselves. ee phob Phob means ghost (as in Pi Phob). Again a more funny way to address you. There has been a discussion before about the use of 'ai' 'ee' 'mung' (you) and 'koo' (I). Search for it if you're interested.

it's actually "nan le", pronounced like Nana minus the last "a" and lay as in the potato chip, and means "like that" -- not "nga la", which would mean...who knows what? plainly, and with emphasis, "mung" means you -- as one of "my nigga's" might say to another. it is used among familiars, esp teens and working class people, or those who want to affect tough, "ghetto"-esque dialects, like Thai yuppies wanting, despite their preppy button-down shirts, to sound like rap stars (who are also posing, but have a slightly more legit entitlement.) it's scarcely surprising that a sad old off-white man like DrL, hoping for validation at any cost in forums like these, knows vaguely what it means, but scarcely how to use it. the unadvised use of "mung" in public is quite rude and, well, unadvised -- you, as a farang, would not want to address anyone that way, particularly a Thai man you do not know, as you may very well be in for a beating shortly thereafter. and, while a typical DrL-ism, the "koo" he uses for the vulgar "I" (personal pronoun) should be "goo"; "koo" means pair, goo -- as in Google -- is the vulgar pronoun in question. DrL seems, incredibly, to have the Phob part right -- though your "buck phob" is doubtless some Issan-ization, as yet opaque to those of us who remain mainly within the "glang" of the nation.

Sorapong said: 'the unadvised use of "mung" in public is quite rude and, well, unadvised' Same thing? So why don't you add value to this thread instead of taking another opportunity to scorn me or other 'inferior' members, you big bird. -------------------------------------------------------------------- and, while a typical DrL-ism, the "koo" he uses for the vulgar "I" (personal pronoun) should be "goo -------------------------------------------------------------------- It seems to me that it is pronounced with a 'harsh' k (kor kwai) instead of a 'soft' g (kor gai)... Please, Master of Dictionaries, get your dictionary off the shelf and enlight us. And is this your irritating babble about correct transliteration ever going to stop? The poster (a newbie in Thai language apparantly) asked for a meaning, not for a lecture. Why is it that when I see Angus of AC/DC I always think about you?

i'm well aware of the definition, and the usages of the word, Do (r) k, unlike you. and yes, now that I've corrected you twice, you've finally managed to use the word correctly. and thanks for making my point: anyone who prefers the advice of a turd-burgling brain-dwarf like you, who needs repeated corrections from me to get something right, is welcome to take it.... ...much the way you take it in the ass from me every time to post in this forum. so much for tooting your own scorn, stud.
