Guys, What does Nam mean? I understand it can mean water or it can mean juice like fruit juice...I think it can also mean soda sometimes...? Is this a generic word that means drinkable liquid...? or is it one of those where it means different drinks with different emphasis? I have yet to be able to properly order a bottle of water in Thai...if I get water it is cuz I was able to order in English. Cyborg

Not necessary drinkable.... with 'liquid' you would be pretty much define it... Nam Man = Oil/Gasoline (Sticky/Greasy Water). Hong Nam = Toilet (Water Room)

According to my little Thai Phrase Book: drinking water-naam plao bottled drinking water-naam deum khuat In my experience if you order "naam plao" you most always get bottled water. LS

Also noticed that when ordering "nam plao," a lot of times if I don't drop the "l," e.g., pronounce it "nam pao" with just the hint of an "l," they don't understand what I'm ordering. Wonder if that's an Isaanization of the Thai? Or perhaps my pronunciation of the "l" is simply too harsh. I suppose that's better than ordering "nam pla" by accident, though (which I've done when I'm burned out) ! - Balls

You could say, "Nam yen, gaew bai nung nah krap". I dunno if that's exactly right but I always get a glass of water. Cheers PS: I'm never sure if they poured the water from a kitchen tap or from a bottle though!

Nam yen kaew nung.... sufficient. Unless you want to imitate Sorapong with his long whining dictionary solutions. Anybody ever ordered 'Nam Pam'?
