Can anybody recommend a good book, CD, website or anything else for me to learn to speak Thai at home please? I know it would be a lot better for me to actually dive in and speak to Thai people but there is a severe lack of them where I live.

I hope to move to Thailand sometime in the not too distant future so feel I should make the effort.

Thanks.

I initially started learning from books in the UK and used the books by Benjamin Poomsam Becker. They are pretty good for beginners. For those who speak basic Thai already, try Thai Reference Grammar by James Higbie and Snea Thinsan. Very good book, but hard going, which teaches you all the grammar. Good reference guide.

The problem with learning from books, without practicing with native speakers, (as I initially found out) is that you are never quite sure your tones are right. I also found out that I could speak reasonable Thai but had real problems understanding when spoken to. However it really helped my reading of Thai script.

There is no replacement for the "Longhair dictionary".

Get as many audio recordings as you can, listen to them as often as you can. This will help you learn the tones. Try to distinguish between the similar sounding words. You will need to get used to the tones, aspirated consonants and the vowel lengths.

Next thing, learn how to read the characters. That's your ticket to increasing your vocabulary. Once you can read, you can then look up Thai words from a dictionary without the need to ask your friends. You can then check out the Thai websites, and try reading sentences, then paragraphs, and then full stories. Initially, you will be looking up almost every words, but after a while you be able to figure the meaning.

Getting a girlfriend who doesn't speak much English will really help, since this will train you to listen to a Thai speaker all the time. You will also learn new words along the way.

Have fun!

In addition to the good advice above---I think the boomsan becker is ok (all three books will give you about the same number of vocab words as the much more expensive linguaphone course), but I like and recommend Essential Thai by James Higbie (book and tape). Might only be available in Thailand though.

Also, although I haven't used it, the University of Northern Illinois has a fairly extensive (and free) online thai language section. Sorry, no link but found easily enough on google.

bkkz's advice is spot on.

I actually never used any of these helpers except for the 'live' trainer in the form of a Thai girlfriend.

If you like to have excellent advice about books, send Sorapong a PM.

Gentlemen: Does anyone know of any learning Thai podcasts ? At least, it could put the insufferably long flight time to some good use.

I have been struggling along for a few years learning to speak Thai,,, have maybe 700-800 words and about 100 slang/bordering on rude words that are fun in bars.
I began with Lonely planet guide and found it a great starter.
I just purchased a " talking dic" ( laugh),, 4,900 BHT at Panthip plaza,,, great help,, pronunciation especially through the ear-phones is a wonderful help. It is also helping me with my Vietnamese language ( 300 words so far). It does Spanish, German, French mChinese, Japanese, Korean Vietnamese, Indonesian as well as Thai, contains phrases as well, Also has all the usual extras such as storage for phone numbers, calculator, world time clock etc etc etc.

At that price it is a great tool.

The one I got is E-Dict VOCAL 201N.

Nope, I don't have shares in this company
