Some forlks consider 'falang' to some sort of insult, but as for me, I get a kick out of it, and actually like to wear a shirt that spells out 'FALANG' (just in case there's a confusion).

I don't mind whether it's, "you" or "Falang" it's the, "Hey" part I don't like! Whatever happened to, "Eskuse me sur".
When I hear, "Hey Falang" I usually reply, "Hey saparot!".

Do they ever address 'us' in such a manner? [Hey falang vs. Hey you] I think not. But, if they did I would be equally put-off.
But nevermind that- if you catch wind of them refering to you as- 'mun' it's time to hightail it.

LOL...Brocher...You reply "Hey Pineapple?". I like that but will pass on using it expect with tailors in Phuket.
I get "Hey you" a lot wandering around the little Sois near the in-laws in Samut Prakan (with the wife - not sure I'd be comfortable alone yet), I've seldom heard "farang" and then it's about me rather than to me (The occassional "Look - a farang" is about it - I've never see another farang in this area but no-one seems overly surprised to see me there).
The scary part is the tone is often sharp and aggressive and it makes you jump, more a "HEY YOU!!!" than a "Hey you" but aggression is the last thing they are intending, most often its just a prelude to them showing off their English skills to their mates.
Intention is the key here and most times whether its Hey you or Hey farang I find they are not intending to be offensive. Enjoy.

Actually I don't get "Hey" much. More like, "You! You!" which bugs me as it's not even what they'd say in Thai if 'you" were equiv. to "khun". How idiotic. You! You! They would say, excuse me, in Thai, Kaw toht na khrap. But apparently when speaking with an alien all rules of manners are out the window. If excuse me is too hard to pronounce, why not, Sorry sir, or Pardon me boy is this the Chatanooga Choo Choo?

I hear "Farang" a lot as I walk by, but that's because I'm wearing my MTB "Farang" T-shirt (the word Farang in large Thai script across the back)
My Tsunami girl, when relating tales of our adventures to her friends the day after, was speaking way to quick for me to pick up on anything more than Farang-this and Farang-that... oh, and the occasional brandishing of the flip-flops she had looted from a store (couldn't wade through the water in high heels). Next trip she took to calling me 'pompoi', which was cute the first couple of times, but got old quite quickly.
