leaford, yup, "yaek bin" works fine or like DrLove's works too, although i would write it as "Khon la bin". Kon (with a falling tone) could be pronouced wrongly to mean "ass". So, that would mean, "a bill for each ass".

Again, there are several ways to write and pronounce thai without the phonetic characters. If one would really listen carefully you probably won't even hear the 'n' because the kon (or khon) and lae (or la) or linked together as one word in speech ... The context in which a word and its pronounciation is used should clearify the right meaning of the word .... But then again .....

yeah... the "l" and "r" always gets me. Most of the time, words that are supposed to have the "r" sound, sounds like "l" as in 'mai bpen lai' (when it should have been 'mai bpen rai') or 'mai loo' ('mai roo').

"Kon lae Bin(one bill per person) and then point to the persons to include in the bill." Just a silly question: if it's 'one bill per person', why do you have to point to indicate the person(s) to include in the bill? BTW, you could tell them "American share"...LOL! haam sup

BK, I was once told that people who were born (and lived) in Bangkok all their lives (so true Bangkokians)pronounce the 'r' correctly while most of the rest of Thailand uses a 'l' sound ... BTW 'American Share' is probably not or misunderstood by half of the world including non-english speaking Thais ... This also applies to 'Dutch Treat' ... The following is ONLY for HS and should be ignored by the rest of the members: Yes, don't point to other people (at or near your table) if you only came with the two of you .. Although pointing in a rapid (switching) way between the two of you might not hurt if the waiter doesn't get it .... Hope that cleared it up for you .... BTW 'American Share' is probably not or misunderstood by half of the world including non-english speaking Thais ... This also applies to 'Dutch Treat' ...

Actually, "American share" is widely understood in Thailand among middle-class Thais, and, in fact, is, AFAIK, UNIQUE to Thailand. "Dutch treat" is MUCH more universal, although I don't know why... Good try, though. BTW, did you know you are repeating yourself? cheers, haam sup

I won't consider most waiters as middle-class ..... perhaps in the USA, but not in Thailand. About repeating myself, please fill me in ....
