Quote: from buxeda on 9:13 pm on Nov. 9, 2004 if you learn your thai only with bgs, you will logically have the same vocabulary as they do. not always an advantage
I'm glad you mentioned this Buck Seeda I only mentioned just last week that the term dTope Salope Salai was a BG term & that if it were used amongst other company it would not be taken lightly I've met SO MANY falahng in LOS that think they can speak Thai, but what they are really speaking is a derelict version of Bar Thai with an obvious influx of Lao Quite funny when just out on the piss, but try using that with a "good girl" and see how far you get, or even better yet with clients or other business contacts

Richie Rev, Firstly let me say, learning the language is the only way to go. Keep it up. Try http://www.learningthai.com to help you with your tones. It has numerous practical phrases and you hear them spoken via the flash player. Don't expect too much - your efforts have been admirable but one year in is still early days. It will get easier - learn to relax and you'll take more in - sometimes its easier to eavesdrop on a conversation as you are not required to formulate replies.

tone is VERY important. I have said some words to my TGF and she looks at me funny. Then I point to the word in a book and she says Oh, you mean "....." and it sounds the same to me.. To them it is a completely different word.

Yeah, it's not the same reading in a book or listening to a tape as it is out on the street. I would say, to accelerate the process either enroll in a formal Thai language class or spend lots of time with a native Thai speaker who is willing to tutor you. Simply learning to properly pronounce all the variations of the words transliterated as "mai" and "sai" could keep you busy for a few hours... and I mean properly pronounce, not just say it farang-style... kao jai mai?

Tapes (especially the ones by Poomsan Becker and the Linguaphone series) will help your vocabulary immensly. There is no substitute for listening to the way words are properly pronounced. The context is best picked up through listening to conversations. So I think both are valuable. Reading transliteration helps to learn new words, but you will likely say the word wrong or with an noticeable accent. Best step is to learn to read Thai... difficult, I know.

Quote: from LocalYokul on 8:05 pm on Nov. 9: another example I just thought of was Nah Gleeyat It's spelled Nah Gleeyut (Ugly Face)
yodel, that's as hilarious a gaffe as i've yet seen you make, and i'm surprised no one else called you on it. the prefix "nar" at the beginning of the term "nargliat" -- "ugly" -- is neither spelled like the thai word for face, nor does it literally mean "ugly face". the "nar" at the beginning of that word is the same "nar" prefix in "nar-rak" ("adorable" ), "nar-son-jai" ("interesting" ), "nar-yu" (a place worth being in), etc. it does not mean "face". it connotes something possessing the quality indicated by the word which follows the prefix "nar". caution to anyone who hopes to learn at this jerkyl-scholar's desk...

----------------------------------------------------------------- and i'm surprised no one else called you on it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I guess 99% of those who read it, have no clue. The other 1% is dozing off (me) or just doesn't find it necessary to be #1 in the class... Where would we be without you?
