Nothing strange about having more than one way to say a word.

Look at words like "tomato" and "banana". Different ways to say them depending on where you're from.

And the word "farang" too. As far as I can tell, the correct pronunciation is "FAH - LONG" but I still heard "FAH - RANG" and "FAH - RONG" (though I don't recall a Thai saying it those ways... only foreigners - but some who have been here for 10 - 20 years so the should know how to say the word properly).

All I know is that I hear "FAH - LONG" dozens of times everyday as I'm out and about so that's how I say the word myself.

I suppose it is a tricky question trying to determine what the "proper" pronunciation of a word is.

Do you want "Ketchup" or "Catsup" with your fries?

It has been rumoured that 'Farang' comes from the word 'farangset' (France).

So it makes sense it's pronounced with a 'rang' sound.

There maybe more than one pronunciation of a word however there is only one "correct" way to pronounce the said word. Just because some chap (s) decide (s) to pronounce a word differently doesn't mean that it's correct it's just different!

Later on if enough folk adopt the hitherto incorrect pronunciation then sometimes the word becomes acceptable in everyday speech but it's still incorrect!

Most Philippinos that I've met don't know the difference when they pronouce an "F" and a "P", they don't seem to be able to hear the difference like the Thai with "L" and "R".

Cheerio
PS: I wish'd I listened more durin' that English word roots class when I was a nipper....

If you read the Thai spelling it is HWA...there is no vowel between the 'H' character and the 'W' character.

Eh? No vowel between the H and W? What do you call the sara-ah there then? It's spelled hoh-heep, sara-ah, woh-waen. But actually the woh-waen isn't even considered a consonant - when it's in conjunction with the sara-ah written above and before it, it's actually a "ua" vowel. Like in the words dtua (body), klua (afraid) and, of course, hua (rock) which is the word in "hua hin".

Whether someone wants to use an alternative transliteration of hoo-ah or hwa, I don't really give a rat's arse, but they should all be trying to approximate the same sound, which is conventionally transliterated as "ua".

and as for "farang", it's clearly "fah-rahng"... not "rang" as in "he rang me a moment ago".. i'm sure that's what DrLove was trying to say but what's clear to him might not be clear to a native speaker of English who doesn't know much about thai vowel sounds (and I don't mean you, Yurune mate).

I was simply (without making an effort to indicate the right sound) explaining that it sounds not like a 'rong' but as a 'rang'.

Furthermore, it is correct there is no vowel between the Hoh Heep and the Woh Waen.... it's not a sara-ah but a Mihunagaht (which is strictly seen not a vowel but a sound indication and cuts it in a short sound).

re pronunciation, of course the difference between your average BG and an upper class thai is quite significant, whilst I have even seen Bangkok thais struggle to understand / keep up with the speed of southern Thai speakers -
Personally, I never bother to query, or try and right anyone, but just use their different pronunciations, be they Thai or 'Farhlang" - to garner a bit more info about where they are from, or how much they really know or understand !
e.g. Amazing the number of "alleged" Hi-So, upper class University educated, Bangkok born and bred TGs - who when you mutter an Issarn 'low class' obscenity show immediate reaction - a language the true blue upper class TG wouldnt understand !!

- yet another reason for my TG definition -

Right, that's what I thought. But I thought I'd just emphasize that it's like "bunk", not like "bank".

Well, in that case I stand corrected. I always thought that sara-ah is called the same regardless of whether it's written as the "two little circles between the consonants" or the little twirly thing above and between consonants. My mistake.

Tough talking about thai script on a web board that doesn't support it..
