Gentlemen: I'm answering my own question here. I found a Learning Thai Podcast on itunes. They have 10 lessons so far. It's by Jo and Jay Uhdinger. It's free, but they would'nt mind a 5$ donation through Paypal. They also do Thai-German lessons. I'm downloding the lessons now. I'll let you know my impressions later on.

It gets the job done, but is unfortunately quite boring and devoice of any pep, or life - not that I expect action/adventure, but ChinesePod.com (same thing with Chinese) is far better structured in terms of compelling content.
Still, as I said, it gets the job done.

I found the Courage software Thai interactive course on CD-ROM the best. Takes you from beginner to a reasonably advanced level. Lots of sound files, quizzes and exercises to reinforce the lessons.
Not cheap though and probably only any use if you want to learn to read Thai as well as speak it.
That together with the Higbie Thai reference grammar book were the best that I could find.

that's what I started with, and I know CG uses it as well...not cheap over 200 great British Pounds I believe (was well over 100 when I bought it 14 years ago)

Those kinds of electronic systems are big now in California where the gov't has recently ennacted a mandate for required afterschool classes--so many Mexicans now and a good deal of Asians. The idea is self and whole family study at home with these devices or CD's. So language schools, kind of like in BKK, are starting to spring up more, many of them subsidized (those accepting the welfare folks) or through charity.
Some of you other guys of course prefer the BKK Afterskool courses...

I found Pimsleur's Comprehensive Thai (30 lessons on 16 CDs) very good. I copied the CDs to my ipod and continue to listen to them at every opportunity. I bought the course used on Ebay for $140, but see it new at Amazon for $217. You can sample the beggining lesson for free at the Pimsleur website.
