According to my sources, Mel Gibson's definition is exactly right. Village folk discover their desecrated poultry, etc, and have to guess which one of their number is the appalling and pathetic Phi Pob. This person may have died already or simply be possessed and made to be this way--seems to depend on tradition.
More accurate than Zombie, which is from Voodoo, a corpse made possessed by a witchdoctor, and controlled by the witchdoctor. Hey... DocLove, got any zombies up your sleeve?
I can't remember... Wasn't there a Phi Pob being depicted in the Thai film "Lhorn", which featured about 4 ghost stories from different parts of Thailand. It also featured my favorite sexy Thai actress, Ying Julaluk Krittiyarat (as a succubus type ghost).

Yeah, it's good. Though if she is, as I suspect through looking at the other words you've posted, beretta, just transliterating letter for letter from the Thai (after the particular system that they taught her in Thai school), then you might want to include an 'r' after the 'p'... 'preeset', since there is a 'ror reau' there in the Thai word which is the actual equivalent of 'r', though it is usually only heard pronounced clearly when spoken by a Bangkok Thai trying to impress others. Nonetheless, the letter is actually in the word, so you might as well include it.
