Recently MrsJoe proudly announced "If the pizza gets here cold again, I'm going to call and complain!" -- and she actually did it.  She was quite pleased with herself and I was too. She also learned that it sometimes pays to stand up for yourself and not just say "mai ben lai.": we got some free ice cream.
I'd never want her to get as wound up about things as I sometimes do, but I am proud to see her become more assertive (not aggressive mind you) over the years. While I have become more and more mellow. (Given where I started, that's still not very mellow )
Kippling was wrong; East and West can meet with fine result on occasion.
Sorry for the threadjack. Maybe we need a new thread on "cross/cultural relationships: pluses and minuses".

GJ, I look at it this way: Ýbetter for someone to vent here, where there's apt to be some empathy, than to fly off the handle in public. ÝI'm sure you're comment was meant as light hearted, but don't forget that culture shock is normal.
ÝI think Phantom said he's in LOS about 6 months, which is just about the right time for SOMETHING to drive him buggy. ÝYou're around longer and I'm sure there's the thing or two that you still find maddening. ÝIt's how we cope with the situation that counts.

Though you're right that my comment was meant as somewhat lighthearted but you were right to call me on it because as you know doubt detected, there was an element of censure as well. I admit that I have always had little tolerance for intolerance of Thai culture from people who are choosing to live here.
There's lots of thing I find maddening. It's not fair or right but I confess that I feel someone who's been here a while has more right/reason to complain. I tend to think if you can't handle it for 6 months...
But your points are spot on and I concede to them. Thanks for you feedback. Good call.

Well, I was looking for some pencil leads just last week, and I got the answer "Mod laew"... I was thinking, (yeah right, you lazy f**ker). I smiled with a "khob khun khrab". And after 5 minutes, I found what I wanted. Moral of the story, if you want to get it right, do it yourself.
