seubeu,

Looking like a foolis definitely one of the reasons why I don't practice my Thai as often as I should.

Can't wait to try out your suggestion when I arrive on 30th...hopefully the long haired dictionary will give me some 'oral' lessons as well.

I bought a few more bottles of 2000 Bordeaux this afternoon, but I need to tuck those away for a few years.  Maybe I'll have a beer but I am feeling a bit under the weather.  At least I regained enough strength to make my chili for the game tomorrow.  Anything for a beer?  Not necessarily, sometimes it's wine, tonight I'll probably tap into the Armangac.  It's better for when you're not feeling well.  I only drink for the medicinal purposes, of course.  Although now that I think about it I did have a Boddington's for lunch.  It went nicely with the fish and chips.

BK,

You mentioned 2 places that I could get the books from Bookazine or Asia Books.

Would definitely love to check out the selection there...just wondering where these places were in relation to where I will be staying (Sukhumvit Soi 4)?

Me too BK, are they in robisons or MBK? Hey HUNTED, I dont know about the tapes with the set BK has mentioned but, The set I bought a couple of years ago was over my head. I could'nt keep up with the speaker, it was crazy bro. It was coversational thai in & days WoW !!!!! I just had to look in the book and pick out a few phrases to learn, which helped alot.  So I hope these tape/book sets wont give you a hard time.

HUNTED, Yes, you are on Sukhumvit Soi 4, and Bookazine is across the main road near Sukhumvit Soi 5. Bookazine next to Starbucks, you can see it as it is on the main road (Sukhumvit).

Asia Books is located at Landmark Hotel as well. So, take your pick of shops to buy from.

Hi guys,

In addition to the many books available on the subject of learning how to read and write in Thai there's a plethora of useful (and free) resources on the internet.

I speak Thai fairly well by now, but somehow I have never gotten around to investing the amount of time and dedication necessary to learn how to read or write(!) the damned language.

Then I stumbled on two internet sites that really got me started reading. After only a few weeks of trying I am beginning to be able to read very easy kid's stuff in Thai. Even though it's still "John and Mary goes for a walk" it has given me immense satisfaction to suddenly be able to make some sense, at least, of the damn Thai 'hieroglyphs'. I would recommend this experience to all - its great.

Now for the info that helped me:

http://www.learningthai.com

- A versatile place to start learning how to read Thai. Has several cool tools such as the translation robot which BK has talked about and the virtual Thai keyboard which has also been mentioned on this board before. One great thing about this site is it has small practice sessions allowing you to listen to the actual pronunciation of the words and letters. A great help for the linguistically challenged

Another site helped me out:

http://thaiarc.tu.ac.th/host/thaiarc/thai/thindex.htm

- Presents the Thai alphabet with a very clear and well-articulated (female) speaker. The interface kind of sucks though, so I reshaped the site to fit my own preference with an easy-to-use mouse-over audio technique.

Try it out at http://dryborg.has.it

It's still a work in progress though.... Haven't gotten around to doing the vowels and intonation shit yet. It's not meant to be a thesis on the Thai language - more like a simple, but practical tool to get the Thais' funny alphabet down.

Greetings and Salutations

Dryborg
