Why is shaving considered a western concept ? In the warmer climes of the east, it is also hygienically necessary to trim if not totally shave. Unforunately many people do not do either.

K-Man - For men, shaving is not necessarily good in tropical zones. For women, for comfort and other reasons, the same thing may apply.
Body hair provides two contradictory functions. In cold climes, it helps to insulate the body, in hot, it helps to conduct a small amount of heat, but a larger amount of moisture away from the body either to the atmosphere, if one is nude, or to outer clothing.
The cumulative effect in either environment is insulative, concerning heat, and conductive, concerning moisture.
But, in either case, a shower should more than adequately deal with any hygenic conerns and since bathing or showering numerous times each day is common in Thailand, I see no problems either way.

I think you meant the tropics. Warm or cold climates are mostly defined by latitude and not by longitude. Both in the west and the east there are many places with 4 seasons. In the east places like Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Ulan Bator get quite cold during the winter.
Anyway, I think shaving is a more recent "fashion"concept, which once we get used to, becomes the stablished standard. For illustration purposes just look at pictures of Playboy playmates of 30 years ago; they had more pubic hair than those of today
