and something spelled "cheu" would rhyme with the thai word for "hand", though what you might mean by it is a mystery.

Sorapong,
Newsflash: the Thai word for "name" does indeed rhyme with the thai word for "hand". Hence, the transliteration "cheu" for "name" is about the best we can do.

The word for adulterer rhymes with poo, or with shoe, or with the sound your little toy train makes, sonny. The fact that it's a rising tone doesn't make it "ue" or "ew", it's still the same vowel sound as in "roo" for "to know".

5 - Rama + the numeral

And the good Doctor's been at it again, too.. You can't seriously claim that THAT'S the correct pronunciation/transliteration of the streets Rama 1-9 in Bangkok?

Ever heard anyone speak of "Prah-rahm see" for example? I'm surprised if you haven't, considering that most of your lady friends probably come from the Klong Toey area.

Yes, it's official. You both are equally useless. But entertaining, I'll give you that.

Yes, you're right. I slipped.... prarahm is the correct word in Thai for Rama.

And yes, I haven't thought about that, but already two girls come indeed from that area.

Yes, I printed out a copy and I look at it from time to time, so when U see some poor bro walking around Bkk (sometime later this year ) holding a copy of this and scratching his head still trying to make sense of it all---that'll be me. So just flag me down and I'll buy U a beer. Cheers.

Ha ha, this is good cause thats exactly how I'll be when I'm there. Except, I'll be totally confused and will try to read the Bkktonite handouts upside down. Enjoy Bro.

How do you say "young and pretty"
I know suay=beautiful and narak=cute, so is there a word for pretty? how would you say this, dont forget to include young, so it'll be "young and pretty"

almost forgot, how do you pronounce the word "Fat" in thai--saw it spelled as --Ouan, but I cant seem to get the sound of this word correctly. Is there a word that this might rhythm with that I could practice on?

waxhead
ouan = fat

the key is to understand what the mouth shape is doing for this sound, the same as bpor bplar sound, ngor ngoo sound and other sounds not found in english or Japanese or other languages sometimes.

start with the oo (rhymes with goo, poo, shoe, loo, do)

then say an (rhymes with won, one - actually not quite, but this is the closest you can get for now)

the oo sound is coming from your throat right, with a round shape in your mouth, pursed lips. Then add on the second part of the sound, which is the an part - say...

ooo

then

won.

That is the first approximation. Now, we need to tweak it a bit:

add in the falling tone (because it has a mai toh, so that means it is a falling tone sound). Start the ooo high, start your pitch falling then fall through the ooo, and the won should be low by the end. If you do these steps, you should be understandable - the right sound, the right tone - possibly not quite the right vowel lengths though.

the two sounds are not really quite the same length, you can't break it into like 2 syllables, and say each and expect it to sound like a THai saying the same thing. So.... for this bit, having got the sound basically about right, you need a Thai person to say it many times, and repeat and repeat until what you are saying sounds more like what they say.

I can't offer more advice, since there are Americans and Welsh and Europeans and stuff, each with their own accent, and saying any more will probably not help!

The 'U' like in the German 'U Boot'.
