Thanks guys for the above clarifications. One more thing though, the use of the word "mai" for "Not". I think I heard it said in 2 different ways so don't know if both correct or use differently in context. I've heard "mai" said exactly as "my"---sound and english word for self, and "mai" said as "may"---same sound for the month.

Well, actually 'mai' (the 'my' sound) has different meanings. depending on the tone. For instance it might mean: Not, Wood or used at the end of a sentence to indicate a question. The 'May' sound I am not quite sure. It's hardly used (if used ever) as a single word. It is a girl's name though. The word coming close to trhe sound is probably 'meh' as in 'rot meh' (Bus).

I always pronounce it the same as the English word "my" and I seem to be understood! You could hear it as the month May, due to the person's accent. No doubt most Thais will understand the meaning from the context and put up with your/my bad pronunciation! Cheerio PS: You have to be aware of usin' the correct tone though!

I've been practicing speaking Thai numbers but still sometimes not sure if I am correct. So far no trouble up to 100, but not sure how to say 101 in Thai? ex: 11=sip et, so is 101=neung roy et? Also at a MP I was quoted 1500bahts, the guy said to me Haa Roy Neung Pun? I was taught the numbers should be said from the largest number then lower ones after as in neung pun haa roy, so which is correct? thanks

An interesting note, we use sip-et for 11, but if you dial the time service "181" (sample), you will hear sip-neung instead of sip-et for 11.
