An interesting note, we use sip-et for 11, but if you dial the time service "181" (sample), you will hear sip-neung instead of sip-et for 11.

Because the software is not intelligent enough and parses the number digit-by-digit.

The window stickers are adverts for DTAC Telephone Service... nothing to do with The Tourist Authority or the drivers.

I think they are nothing more than free sun screens....

On of my run-ins with a taxi driver (I have a few on weekly basis) involved a driver who attempted to turn on the meter twice on the same trip.

When I referred to 'I love Farang', he looked at me and said:'hmmmm.... I LOVE MONEY!'.

exactly.... however I have heard people moan that the screen says "We speak English" (DTAC) and seem to think it refers to the taxi driver..... 555

Not so, Yurune. Those taxis sporting the stickers are purported to have drivers who are proficient in basic English. I've had at least one ride- and a funny moment it was- where I was told to put away my Thai by the driver [as he pointed to the sign] as he could talk in my native English.

Or so that was how I read about it, from the newspapers, when the program was launched.

Totally wrong.

The drivers were given a free DTAC SIM card to display the signs.

The idea is....it's not the driver who can speak English, but they are to dial *1201 using the SIM card to get DTAC (who reportedly do speak English) to translate for you.

Of course...several taxi driovers often drive the same taxi....so it's a maximum 50% chance you get the bloke who understands the scheme.
