issanking: "your hand makes you rich your banana makes you poor" well, close enough; the meaning's more or less intact but it's probably not quite the well-known phrase you were hoping to cite... local: "Ta Lung = Doggie style" you are dreaming; "talung" means simply "naughty", no direct connection to doggy style, which thai's call "ta ma" -- lit. "doggy style" "gleun" simply means "swallow" and "dtua dam" refers only to anal sex between two men, and usually in the context of imprisoned convicts

the Tah Lung I referred to was not TaLeung, different pronunciation. Tah means pose or posture, and Lung means back.. Doggie so it should have been Meu tum Rooway, not Mer... Gleun, yes, I think we agree here. and TooRate is the word for disgusting...

the word for back is better transliterated as "lang"; "ta lang" would mean "back style" or "back position" -- a bit literal, and not to the point since there is a common thai slang phrase for "doggy style" -- "ta ma" -- which I already mentioned. "taleung" means naughty, or slightly dirty, in the sense of "you have a dirty mind"; "TooRate" means "pathetic". "nargliat" is alot closer to "disgusting". i've always understood the maxim under question -- "meu tam ruay, kuay tam jon" -- as meaning, "use your hand (i.e. jerk off) and you'll be able to save your money, follow/use your dick (as in, with a chick, or a hooker) and you'll end up broke". interpreting "john" as the word for thief rather than the word "jon", meaning poor/broke/homeless, makes no sense to me. anyone want to weigh in further on this? by the way, issanking, it seems you're confusing "kuay" -- slang for dick -- and "kluay": "banana". there's no "l" sound in the slang term for dick. also, the term "jump jee" refers firstly to a kid's game, but is sometimes used by adolescents to refer to sex; "jump ma" is not a widely used term.

It occurs to me that the expression “meu tam ruay, kuay tam jon” could also simply mean “your hand will make you rich, your dick will make you poor” -- a simpler way of implying what my first suggestion was laboring over. ps, the word for thief sounds more like "joan" than "john".

i've also seen dictionary definitions that translate TooRate as pitable and/or obscene -- but the conversational sense of it is closer pathetic, in the sense of "that's/you're pathetic", said in reaction to something one says or the sight of one's appearance. it's used dismissively, incredulously, in an almost mock-appaled way -- though it's rarely used to in accusing someone of doing or saying something "obscene" in the same way "taleung" (closer to naughty) or "lamoke" (lewd). oo-baht is another useful term for disgusting (repugnant, repellant), as when wind is violently broken.
