Ok Scout...

Many apologies... but as I said 'krengjai' is a Thai concept and we really have no equivalent in english. Whichever word you use - respect, consideration, shy - really doesnt convey what 'krengjai' means.

If the person understands some Thai I think it is best to say....

'Can I buy you dinner?'
'Its ok. I am krengjai'

If not... I think a different word would best convey 'krengjai' in different circumstances.

No single english word adequately or even inadequately is a good translation of krengjai.

Abrak, if the person speaks and understands 'Krengjai' wouldn't it be more convenient to say the whole (simple) sentence in Thai? 555

Thank you Ab, That answered.

Thats why I asked at the first place. I needed help with my limited vocabulary. The true objection is to express the exact feeling to the person I try to communicate with. To let them know that i'm really Graing-Jai. Not juat saying "No Thanks"....Graing Jai attitude is definitely unique indeed, the expression of gratitude, repectful, ungreedy and being humble. But westerners do not have a certain word translated into this. Would be nice to have an easy way to say it....

too bad it doesn't come into play when cutting in line (jumping the queue).

So true, LocalYokul. Line cutting behavior is very rude, and it happens all too often. I have also encountered non-greng-jai-like behavior dozens of times when people stand side-by-side on escalators and do a great job of not noticing if someone behind them would like to pass. Another favorite is when those who wish to board the Skytrain do not wait for others to get off the Skytrain BEFORE boarding. I used to think that the mere existence of the word "greng jai" in the Thai language suggested that most all Thais were particularly considerate of others. In the Ladprao area, many Thais are not greng jai. There may very well be a demographic factor at play here, and a higher percentage of Thais in other regions may be grang jai.

I was wondering if that was gonna trigger...

Forget about it Thor, it's nationwide, and then some. Thais who've grown up in LOS even continue their inconsiderate behavior outside LOS, especially when driving.

I had this just yesterday in the SubWay train. Couldn't get off the damn thing cause all the eager ones outside were blocking our path and trying to push their way in...555

Same with lifts in a busy building.

My favorite is when there's a conglomeration of people at the bottom or top of an escalator. They get to the end and then stand there deciding where to go next, while everyone behind them is about to run them down.

Worst case I saw was when a Father was pushing his daughter to the front of the line at a Ronge Po (near PTTY) filling station convenience store. The daughter was looking back at him embarassed and the Father kept edging her forward. Finally the big Jester's fellow in front of me leaned over at him sort of menacing-like and they both got to the back of the line.

Can you imagine teaching your children how to be rude... (cut in line) ??

or how about teaching your 10 year old how to drive a motorcycle down the wrong side of traffic and cut off other cars to switch over to the proper side...

=====

and yes DL,

been there done that at the ATMs. definitely a case of NO Graing Jai when they shove in each of their entire family's ATM cards and do one transaction after another while the other patrons are gathering behind them.

Funny, I asked all the ladies in the office the meaning of "greng jai" and when or how you are supposed to use it......I can now confirm, also well educated Thai ppl don't know how to explain in a simple way this issue!
It's like trying to explain a feeling or a state of mind.....
"Yes I accept your inviatation for a dinner but I'm sorry for disturbing you bacause of this...."
A mix of different feelings...glad to accept, shy to accept, ashmed to accept.....
Love this Country!
