Khanom pang = bread

Khanom pang ping = toast. Why, because the toaster makes a ping sound when it fires the toast out!

Any other silly "reasons" behind translations?

Cheerio

Uhm.. cats are called "mee-ow" cos thats the noise they make when you kick them?. frogs are called "gop" cos its the noise they make when you step on them?.. dogs are called "mah" cos all Thai dogs have a hair lip?

no, because "bping" refers to anything cooked on or against a hot grate or metal mesh, as in goong bping: barbequed shrimp

does maew sound like mee-ow to you? nevertheless, the liklihood of an onomatopoetic origin for that word is pretty strong.

baabaa bo-bo has been in colloquial use since at least 1964, when Mary Haas's classic dictionary was last updated.

as to Brocher's "joke", it's clearer than ever that some comedy is simply tragic.

It's tragic that you didn't recognise the "comedy" in my post when other people obviously did. Perhaps it was too subtle for you.

I was thinking exactly the same thing Brocher.. just before I scrolled down to your post.
But to give some of the humourless guys in here some credit.. they are no where near as analy retentive as some of the tossers over in Thai Visa.. especially the teachers forum.

Actually.. Siamese cats have a very deep and distinctive "meow" that does sound remarkably like the Thai word for cat. Very different from "Farang Cats" "the liklihood of an onomatopoetic origin " (to quote your dictionary) is not just "strong".. I'd say it was definate.

don't know how you got your hands on my dictionary, or what made you think I was quoting from it, but given the spelling challenges you fail to surmount with your every sentence, you should probably try turning to it more often.

Oh for Gods sake.. give it a rest you humourless pedantic nit picker.
I was going to ask "what spelling challenges".. but on second thoughts.. forget it. I no longer care for your opinions as they are way too petty.
Well I hope this thread gets closed soon.. it's served it's purpose.
For the life of me.. I can't understand how someone so humourless, so petty and churlish, so devoid of any degree of "sanook" could have an interest in the "Land of Smiles".. oh, hang on.. yes I do.. I just glanced at the site's title!

Go check out the "Blue haired old ladies" at Thai Visa".. they'll love you.

Oh well.. no worries, mai bpen rai.. Hmmm.. now where did I put that packet of dried squid??????
