If you knew me personally or asked around, you wouldn't have me to convince you.
The whole point is that you supposedly know how to learn Thai, but failed yourself. Hence you think that others who claim to speak Thai can't. At least not above the level of talking monkey.
And as a 30 year old veteran, I knew already how to speak Thai before I even knew Soi 6.
Why don't you practice with your buddy Chucky? I am sure he speaks perfect Thai.

Seems like this is a pissing contest to me. Kudos to you if you can read and write and understand even the most complex phrases. But don't be mistaken that you have to be Hemingway or Whitman to be effective. Illiteracy is a testament to being able to communicate without reading or writing. It just depends how far you want to take it.

To get back to the issue at hand. There is plenty of available research on second language learning that clearly states that being able to read and write effectively increases your communication skills and vocabulary and the ability to speak in a variety of contextual situations.
