X,

Once in LOS just ask somebody to speak it for you. Thais are usually very friendly and helpful people.

- correct, just ask a Thai, if your not in LOS, go to your closest Thai restaurant !  Think it pays to use your own "phonetics" of course when writing things down, as we can all differ in that respect -  yeah Mr Joe, whats happening, I've got to speak Issarn now to impress the taxi drivers !

When I travel in LOS I cheat and take a translater with me. And it helps if she is good fun and great in the sack. Perhaps your spec. will be different 555

I think the sound bits are nice, perhaps have them in a small format to save you some bandwidth (MP3 or something).

What I would really like though, is Phonetics.  While you can get it a bit off the sound bites, it's not always so clear.

For example, english phonetics:

Ghost: Go-st
Knight: Nite
Love: La-vv
Morning: Mor-Ni-Ng

I think that would be best with pronounciation especially some some letters sound differently in Thai than typed (R = L ?)

BK,

Your Thai language .pdf is a great starting place, and very useful. I took it to BKK last time I was there and shared it with my TGF. She was impressed, and we both laughed as we went through the section on body parts and "bar-oriented" phrases. I particularly like the large font you use for the Thai -- in many books it is very difficult to distinguisk the small vowels and some of the pronunciation marks, but when I printed out your .pdf file, it was clear as a bell.

The new "sound" stuff is great. Gives me some extra practice in putting together real sentences. And, again, the font is really readable.

Now the only problem we will have is twisting MrJoe's arm to surrender some of his secret Isaan code! Ha!

BallsB, yep, I thought that Thai language PDF would be a great ice-breaker. We (Toto and I) tested it out at the Emmanuelle bar, a couple of months ago. And this is the time when you can say "taet" (clitoris) in front of a girl, without getting slapped. Glad you enjoyed it, I will be adding more phrases soon!

I'm not sure what you want here. All the Thai phrases have been transliterated into the latin alphabet, what more are you asking for? As long as the transliteration is clear and consistent that's all you can ask for. Personally, I would like the tones written into the transliteration, but I know that can be tedious and not for everyone. If you want to know proper pronunciation you should learn to read Thai; but if the transliterations are consistent you can still do a decent job once you get a few words under your belt (e.g. you can distinguish b vs. p vs. bp).

The only thing you need to know about R vs. L, you already know. All the transliterations should be done as R, and each person should use their brain to convert the L they hear into an R.

TimidGuy,

I totally disagree with phonetics being better than the sound bytes.  I soooo hate phonetics.  They do seem to be so person-specific.

While I would agree with your phonetics for 'ghost' and 'knight'... those for 'morning' and 'love' have me shaking my head.  Like TPE says... [it pays to use your own "phonetics" of course when writing things down, as we can all differ in that respect].

Mind you... I can't handle the phonetics for my own language.. let alone for Thai.  I use an online dictionary for my own language that has a "click to hear this word spoken" thingy.
