Really, this topic would be better named "Can I learn some Thai to be in BKK"... I don't care HOW hard you study with the Pimsleur, or any other course, you WON'T be able to speak Thai in 2 weeks. Granted, everyone is different, and if you already speak a tonal language, you will be ahead of the game, but EVERYBODY needs a LOT more than 2 weeks to actually get even the rudiments of Thai speech. You may THINK you speak Thai, but Thais will not share your opinion. You may fall into this lovely trap: You practice saying "Sawatdee Khrap." and the Thai for "Please get me some chicken with chili and basil". Your pronunciation is PERFECT - for those two sentences. Now, the waitress begins to speak normal, everyday conversational Thai to you. You nod happily and obliviously. She has just asked you if want it EXTRA HOT! You EXPIRE from terminal mouth-fire. Anyone who has read my posts on studying Thai will know what is coming: Listen a lot, and get some feedback. You CAN'T do it with out feed back, and your listening:speaking ratio should be 100:1. Don't get a Thai girl to teach you, unless she is a Thai language teacher. Lek from Alley Cats is NOT who you want to emulate. For those who are serious, there is probably a Thai wat in a major city near you that has classes, and if you spend time in BKK, AUA is a good, cheap place to start. BTW, the little yellow dictionary is Robertson's. Among the best, it wont help you much until you can hear, and reproduce all 5 tones. Then, you will be able to tell the difference between 'near' and 'far'... haam sup

My advice to absolute beginners is begin here http://www.learningthai.com/speak_thai.html You can hear the phrases and have some control over when you learn what you learn (for example you may want to first master numbers in thai) by picking the lessons. Disadvantage is that being on the Net its hard to practice on the plane. I've used both the Rosetta Stone (so-so) and Pimsleur (good) to study Thai and which I find helpful for keeping my (still basic) Thai serviceable during the periods I am not in Thailand but I would not recommend either for Day 1 beginners. Once you grasp the basics and get to Thailand the fastest way to absorb the language is with what Stickman calls an LHSD (Long Haired Sleeping Dictionary).

That is a really good website. I agree with most of your post, except that I think it's a BAD idea to learn from a LHSD, IF you want to be able to speak to regular Thai folks. It's kind of like learning English by hanging out in South Central LA, on the street: "So, Mr. Ambassador, who's the funky bitch in the picture on your desk???" haam sup

Haam Sup so true and well said 5555 - I was trying to think of a way to say that. Perhaps I should have said that if the Thai course you want is "Sex Tourist Level 1" and you are okay with everyday Thais knowing that is where you studied then LEK the LHSD is the "crew" for you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------- DrLove, what is the Thai word for "puffies"? I remember someone asking about this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I might have to pass on on this one. I am even not quite sure what 'puffy' actually stands for although I think Traci Lords' tits might be classified like that. If if is something like 'swollen up' I would go for: 'nom boo-am'

I'm going to be visiting BKK in January and was wondering if anyone can recommend a useful phrasebook for me to take along? Looking for something that will help me stumble through basic phrases, enough to get by. Thanks

The Lonely Planet mini guide seems to be quite popular. Or try to get yourself a LHSD. BTW Do you know Tyler Durdin?
