Phantomtony- Thai is and can frequently be spoken in a very blunt and direct manner. It may be better to start off by thinking more along the lines of telling them what you want than asking. Follow that up with classifiers.
You want two big bottles of Heineken: "Heineken song kuat yai khap"
You want two small bottles of Heineken: "Heineken song kuat lek khap"
You want to eat some of those awesome BBQ'd cockles with Som Tum and and a glass of Singha to wash it down:
"Singha nueng ghao khap. Laaw goh Som Tum laaw goh hoi kaeng yang khap"
Your want the bill:
"Check bin na khap"
or
"Geb tang na khap"
You want to cabbie to turn left up ahead:
"Leaw sai toon nii khap"
You want to know the price of that thing your pointing to:
"Anii tawrai khap"
Being direct is fine almost all the time, and a great place to get started speaking.

Yes, Skip has made a good point.
Phantomtony, when I told you to request something in a restaurant by starting with, "Ao..." actually that means, "I'll take..." such as, "I'll take a plate of dogmeat, please" (though without even the pronoun, which isn't always necessary in spoken Thai), which is fairly blunt as well.
That's why I also supplied you with "Kor... noi", for other situations (which may not even occur to a tourist).
But Skip is right, you don't have to have the verb there and can just start with stating what you want with almost all service workers. Remember the polite "khrap" or "khap" on the end and you will be a nice polite foreign gentleman.

When using the singular the object is placed before,
ie : "beer sing ghoo neung khap"

edit in : you can use it either way, neung gao, or gao neung, but when it's pural song gao, sahm gao

Isaan king was almost certainly trying to write 'glass",,,,,,, probably just a type,,, word "ghao" means glass/cup pronounced as is cow but a g/h beginning.
Loung Steeb,, kuat means "bottle" so is not incorrect.

Longsteeb- you're getting closer to speaking than you think. Khuat is a bootle and ghao is a glass. There's plenty of occasions for both.

Sorry guys, I seem to have several transliteration schemes competing in my head. A global standardised scheme is still just a dream.
But Yurune's post brought made a good point and yields a good resource to share. Ghao [or gaaeo] by itself would be better when asking for a glass of water or juices.
And thuay gaaeo would be more appropriate for spirits. See: Drinking Glass
While we're on this word, notice that it's written in the English and spoken with G. Yet this is Kor Khai in Thai spelling, which is mostly spoken and written as K sound. I think we earlier had said there is no G sound associated with kor khai.
