okie dokie. I have used "rak khun mahk mahk" and left out the "pom" of course. So I guess that "ter" also means "you?" If so, would you expect someone to use "rak kuhn" or "rak ter" more commonly?

Why did you leave out the "pom"?

Khun is more all purpose and Ter is perhaps more suitable for those who we are intimate. However, Ter  isn't used all that much, in my experience.

You will notice in Thai songs that thery will use Ter.

I leave out "pom" usually because I say this to her in private or over the phone, so the "pom" is implied. My Thai language books tell me the Thais usually drop the leading pronouns when the context is understood, but I don't understand enough spoken Thai yet to know how much of this they really do. Also, she usually drops the "pom" when she says this to me, and when she says "kit theung" too.

Wow, just graduated to "soapy slave." Guess this is an appropriate thread to do that in.

Oh yes, this is true about the pronouns, but I would venture to say that this might be the one phrase that should be spoken fully. Kind of like the difference between:

"Luv ya'" and "I love you." The second is perhaps a bit more solemn as may befit the situation. Of course, sometimes one might wish to be more casual.

Err...a woman never uses "pom". A man can use both "pom" and "chan" but he is more likely to use "pom' in my experience.

A woman only uses "Chan".

Hey, if I can be an "Oily Master" and occasionally discuss Mrs.Joe at the same time -- you're not so bad!

Got ya. A good clarification, thanks. When I left for the airport last time, and we parted company, my TGF said to me in very solemn English, "I love you", and stressed each word, while wearing a very sad expression. Really stuck with me all the way home (one of the longer plane rides in my life). Really beat the heck out of "Luv ya, cya!". I will remember this when using "pom" with her.

BTW, when would a man use "chan" (short form of "di chan" ), or is this reserved for LBs?

Di Chan is feminine. As to when a man uses chan, I honestly can't remember hearing it single time in any conversation I've had with a male. That's how rare. I heard it the other day on a Thai soap opera ( a great resource for both social/ and linguistic knowledge ) and I was quite surprised.

I couldn't figure out what, if anything, made it more appropriate for the context that I heard it, but when I've asked Thais -- I've never gotten a definitive answer.

I tell you man, that airport scene you described practically brought tears to my eyes -- no shit! I will be so pissed at you if you mess it up with that girl. In fact, unless my nong sao says to have mercy on you, I might have to sort you out!
