Both are very important. It is very useful to see the Thai or a good English phonetic spelling after hearing the phrase, since it is very hard for most of us to distinguish certain Thai sounds clearly.

Take the verb "to change" for example. When I first heard it I couldn't tell if it was "beeun", "breeun" or "bleeun" (not to mention "bpleeun", "pleeun" and all permutations). It turns out it's closest to "bpleeun", which helps me a lot in trying to pronounce it, remember it, and of course, read it.

You got me wrong, I meant Phonetics+SoundByte

That way I can more easily read and understand.

I think the audio-codec used may also be an issue, the audio in the current samples is "blurred", but like BK said, it's just a first draft.

I think MP3 is a preferred format, at around 48kbit (mono, 44khz, 16bit) it should come out to really small files with good quality.

Yup I was thinking of using MP3. Most probably prepare a full document, and then record everything at one go, and save it in MP3 format.

And it would be cool to play it with the iPod.

Timid... BOTH works for me!!  I thought you just meant the phonetics alone.

Optimal would be:

[Thai Script] [English Text] [Phonetic English Text] [HighQuality SoundByte]

Probably need to get a guy and girl with a good voice.  Have the guy record phrases that you should speak and have the girl record phrases you should be listening for.

The point isn't only to know what to say, but also to know what they say.

Can you give an example of "Phonetic English Text" that differentiates it from "English Text". IMO, they should be one and the same.

Certainly someone could transliterate into English in a non-phonetic way (as many Thai names are done), but why would you choose to do this?

Chompoo :
Personally, I think script+phonetic+soundbyte is enough, but some people feel it should be listed, I dunno.

I was wondering if anyone of the pros in this forum know a small program that does transliterate Thai into English (not the actual translation, but the Thai word written using english writing). I'm aware that such a program wont be perfect due to the different ways how to write a thai word in english, but it would help me getting my job done more easy.

Thanks for your help!
